Whats the Job Title of...

You want something practical, to do with computers, you enjoy building PCs..i assume you wish to move further up the ladder than just building PCs so how about.....

IT tech at a school, you start on a pretty pants wage, normally around £15k a year, but the depending on the school a lot can be learnt there as a starting IT job, it's better than going into some crappy support center and starting off sat at a desk with a headset on :p

yeah :) either would be okay, but there are many kinds of technician - what kind could i do?

Well a school technician, from a starting point, would simply be fixing PCs, printers, laptops etc... day to day stuff that goes wrong in a school.

It's a good starting point if you want a job in IT but don't want to be sat behind a desk (and don't like the cold :p) It's where i started, i've now moved on to being Senior technician in the same school, 90% of my day is used up on network based stuff, server configurations and progression towards a windows 7 switch over school wide, hopefully after summer i'll be moving up to network manager if all goes well ;)

I dont like being outside, get cold even in the hot summer days
dont like plumbing, painting, decorating and such
something to do with Computers, but that might have something to do with my OCD (part of my Autisim)

and to me getting watercooling for computers is crazy the last time i checked water + electronics = Disaster!

No money in PC building and don't seem to want to earn an honest days wage grafting so best become a dole mole :D

Pay is crap for that sort of work. My employers would hire a temp in (so no holidays or other benefits) and not pay more than 12k.

Take up Plumbing....pays great and I could tell you a story or 10 with regards to housewives left at home with very little to do....defoe not a boring job;):D

The mind boggles! :p

Do you ever get called out at 2am or anything like that, or is that purely optional, being on call that is...

The majority of low level techie jobs are extremely dull and repetitive - Desktop Engineer, 1st/2nd Line Support, Printer Technician, Network Technician... <insert starter job here>.

It's only when you hit the higher positions that things start to get interesting - when people actually respect your knowledge and let you loose with the newest gadgets, software, and servers.

Just get an entry level job, slog your way through a year of two of mind numbing bordem, and work your arse off getting professional qualifications at the same time.

A school techie would be my preffered route if I were to start all over again; just to do away with the hell that is 1st/2nd line support.
