flight sim x build any ideas guys

I use a 20" Samsung 206BW for a monitor, I wouldn't want anything larger than 20" for a PC monitor personally, but hey that's just my opinion.

I don't think it's as important as CPU power but I guess the 5770 should still cope fine. The 5850 was recommended to my elsewhere so I went for it. Will cost you a bit more though.

Just a thought, you could underclock your GPU by let's say 30-40% and see how much fps you get, it will give you an indicator of how much it affects it ?

No idea how to do that! I finally have a working system 5 weeks after it first arrived so I'm not going to go messing now!!

No worries,

Anyways, looking here http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/cpu_mainboard/amd_vs_intel_-_the_gaming_sweetspot/3

Looks like i7 isnt much ahead of pII in FSX so either the i5 or 955 would be good here. And 3.8ghz is plenty so it's not "only". The other review shows 4870x2 with CF enabled and disabled and looks like enabling CF (4870 vs 4870x2) increases performance so after all it might be worth going for the 5850.

the 955 bundle is working out slightly more expensive than the i5 and with the extra clock speed i think im going to go for the i5, and i didnt mean 'only' like that, for a clock speed increase of 0.6 on the amd chip i dont really see the point in going down the overclock route on that one.

I read somewhere recently that FSX hates CF/SLI so better having one better card.

Don't know about that but looks like it's not as much CPU limited anymore ( maybe it was back in p4 days when it came out ) and uses new GPUs quiet well, so it's either between i5 or 955BE with 5850 whichever you prefer.
The 955 bundle uses overpriced mobo so I'd pick something cheaper, like the 75quid 785g asus which will bring the whole bundle price to around 290quid for cpu+mobo+ram, or the i5 at around 330-350. Might consider getting aftermarket cooler for i5 as well.

ninja edit: 600w PSU will be plenty as well, like the 600w modular coolermaster.

I'd defo go for the i5 4Ghz bundle. It has the H50 cooler. I have had this running now for a few hours in a very warm room and temps maxed out at 70 during stress testing.

It was £469 on THIS WEEK ONLY when I got it but its back up towards £500 now. Maybe wait and see if it gets reduced again. I went for the pre-oc'd bundle as I haven't a clue how to do it myself.

I had a gfx card go back first of all, then the bundle went back, still same problems, and 5 weeks later I get it back today with CPU replaced. It worked so well at stock settings though but problem with the overclock. Finally looking forward to getting a stable system. Don't let that put you off though. I think it was just my bad luck with having to send three things back!
Hey Ringo glad to see u got that bundle working at last, did you have to pay for all the postage charges for the RMA's ??................ Lenny

Yep it was a disaster for me with all the waiting times.. it will be 5 weeks tomorrow since first delivered. I had to pay postage for first RMA of gfx card but OCUK picked up the bundle twice and paid for DPD to collect. Can complain about that at all.

That is mega nice one ringo, that's it I'm copying your rig haha

Enjoy! There are some flickers on the autogen scenery and so still have some tweaks to do but overall its pretty sweet. I think those addons actually improve performance.

Also, I noticed that I was only getting around 20fps unless I ran in full screen mode!
