What 5850 to get?

For my budget I can either get an ASUS card to overclock myself or a Toxic version that can't be overclocked but has a default factory overclock.

Does anyone know how high I could get the ASUS one? And if it is worth the effort over the Toxic?

I would estimate the minimun likley overclock for an ASUS 5850 will be 950core / 1150mem. Most people (including myself) reach 1000core and 1200-1300mem with a small bump in GPU volts.

Out of the two, I would go ASUS.

Running mine at 850/1200 (5870 speeds) with 0.013 bump in volts, 1.100 vs 1.087 for stock.

Just for your info, the Toxic Can be overclocked, just not as high as the standard reference board models such as the Asus... because you cannot up the voltage on the Toxic model

Value for money, the Toxic is Not as good, but has a better, quieter cooler than the ref design boards..

My Toxic is currently running at 825/1150, on standard volts, I have yet to try going any faster, and to be honest, gaming at 1600/900, I don't see the need as it runs everything I have tried, from AvP3 to BFBC:2, at full settings with 4x AA and 16xAF

I'm using AfterBurner, the Asus software (smartdoctor I think?) looked horrible and wasn't as functional. As the Asus card has the same/similiar unlocked bios as the MSI card the voltage tweaking function works on afterburner.

Makes me wonder why they'd lock the v-core on the Toxic 5850 when it's a high-end part. I was interested in it because I have a Toxic 4870 and it's a great card. And I can change the v-core on it just fine :/ (usually run at stock and undervolt it to make it quiet )
