Ugh, what to do.

I have 3 job interviews coming up, in the above locations. All lovely places to live. Now there is no guarantee that I'll get any of the jobs, so I'm not hedging my bets, but I'd like to know people's opinions of the places.

Bristol I know quite a bit about as I race there often. Great for rowing, running, cycling, sports in general. Other then that I don't know a huge amount about it, or where the best areas are to live.

Edinburgh I've been a few times to run the marathon, it's always struck me as beautiful and I would like to live there.

Dorest. My pick of the three. Gorgeous, low population, amazing outdoors. However as I may not have a choice I can't set my future on living here.

All in all - I'm not 100% sure I want to leave Cambridge yet, but if the job is good enough I will. Basically after people's opinions of the three (I know I've asked about Cambridge), what they're like to live in, quality of life, etc.

Bristol is a vibrant, culturally diverse and eclectic, city full of entertainment no matter your forte; I'm sure there are various opinions from our SW contingents but I would avoid St.Pauls, Knowle West, Southmead and Easton.

I like Clifton and Whiteladies, but they come with the according price-tags.

One major perk/drawback to the city is the number of us forum-dwellers in the region ;)

I echo the remarks about Bristol. I've also found the local populous to be surprisingly friendly too - I'm originally an Essex boy.

Clifton is lovely, if you can live there it's the place to be tbh. It does depend what you're looking for though, and there are a lot of nice new flats etc near the harbourside and hotwells area that are pleasant enough, and probably going for not much money atm as things stand.

As for out of town, I'm not entirely sure as I haven't ventured too far out.

In Bristol as said, Clifton, Redland, Whiteladies are all nice places to live, just avoid st pauls/easton. They are utter holes.

Edinburgh is quite small, it has its good and bad parts. But generally a nice place. You'll fit in well here, theres very few Scots...

Edinburgh is a beautiful city, with plenty of history, most of which is accessable. Not to mention that it's centrally enough located for easy access to more rural parts of Scotland to allow for your outdoor pursuits.

That said, I find Edinburgh to be a congested city, esspecially in the summer when it's inundated with tourists, wihch makes travelling around the city cente challanging.

I really enjoy living in Bristol. PLENTY to do - friendly folk, interesting music, good ale.

There are of course dodgy areas alongside the good ones - people have already listed the obviously good and obviously bad (I'm now living in Redland/Cotham) but it's worth looking around some others too:

South o' the river: Southville, parts of Bedminster, Totterdown (lived here for a year)
North Bristol: St Andrews, Horfield, Bishopston, Westbury-on-Trym, Stoke Bishop
Central: Hotwells, Kingsdown, Redcliffe

If you're a bit of a hippy, Montpelier & St Werburghs are nice in a bohemian kind of way..

I moved to Bristol from Northampton nearly 5 years ago to support my other half who was going to do a 3 year degree at Bristol Uni, then another year at UWE.

Initially I hated it here, but I grew to love it.
Got a great job, diving club is ace, there is always plenty going on here and the area is wicked. I get to go home to Northampton to see friends every few months.

Now there is a chance we could be moving back home to Northampton and I'm trying to find ways to stay here. :-/
