Vapor-X

There is a Sapphire 5850 Toxic. Which is better than the Vapor-X model.

Depends on what you are after they are aimed at slightly different markets. Toxic comes with a higher overclock whilst the vapor-x comes with a smaller overclock but much improved cooling system. Can change either of them with aftermarket cooling or manual overclocking but i dont think one is techincally better than the other.

As far as I've checked, they both have the exact same cooler - cannot overclock very high at all because they are Sapphire's own PCB design, uses different internal components, voltage regulator.

but its more expensive an takes up loads of space. im not really looking to extreme overclock my card. just do the maximum on CCC.

ASUS EAH 5850 TOP DirectCU - Link should cost about £10 more than the stock reference version & is quiet when overclocked according to the review.

Is this card out in the UK yet? I can't find it anywhere?

The review was only done last week so not out yet, probally in the next few weeks.

That test sample didn't clock as well as a standard 5850, plus the cooler just blows the hot hair into the case, plus Asus has done a custom PCB not sure if the components are cheaper.

I've gone for the standard Asus 5850 now, I've asked a few people said its quiet plus it disperses the heat out the back of the PC.

Only if u have you're sound very low whiles playing games :p
Turn the sound up, and u won't hear the fan :D

Guess we all have are own views. :)

You're = you are ;)

I reckon the Vapour X cards are overpriced for what you get.

I agree with Nelly that a 5850 would make far more sense than a 5870.

i know that the 5850 is more bang for buck but if youve got the money (like me) then why not go for the 5870. its kind of like saying "5870 makes more sense than 5970" but if you have the money, why not go for the 5970?

Because its far easier to fit 3rd party cooling to a 5850:

5850 cooler = two parts, vrm cooling plate + core heatsink/fan

5870 cooler = one block

On the 5850 you remove the heatsink, split the parts and put the plate back on then attach a vf1000.

On the 5870 you have to figure out how to cool the VRMs scattered around with componants that are taller surrounding each one and they are not big so have little surface area so heatsinks can fall off. All in all a PAIN.

this is getting a tad off topic. its more about the price premium of Vapor-X or other coolers like that Asus DirectCu, not the overclockability provided by expensive aftermarket coolers which need all sorts of extras to use. and take up space. not everyone wants to faff about with these. also my previous post was about the graphics card not the cooling.

so, whats the verdict on (already provided/fitted) aftermarket coolers on the 5870 or 5850?

Ive had vapour x, toxic and power colour PCS cards and the only real benefit is that they are a LOT quieter at stock.
The main problem is they are non reference cards so you cant water cool them, o and they have stoopid pipes sticking out the top :(

not looking to watercool anything. yet. but for now a Vapor-X looks to be the best option. dunno where to find a PCS.
