A job ad I just found for a photography assistant.

Without being daft - I noticed:

We monitor the diversity of applicants and, wherever we can, take positive steps to improve the overall balance.

Now I do believe that an employer should be able to employ who they want for whatever reason, but it also sounds to me that a white male wouldn't stand a chance.

I don't think thats necessarily true. For any organisation working closely to the public eye it is sadly necessary to make such statements. :)

"If you have knowledge of photography and relevant software then that would be great, but what’s essential is substantial experience of working in a busy office/creative environment, knowledge of MS Office and the confidence to communicate with a wide range of people."

Photographic assistant.. Yeah, right!

Reminds me of `The Office `

"I`m Assistant Regional Manager"
"No, you`re Assistant TO the Regional Manager".

They can be as diverse as they want - I think the earlier poster is correct in observation that a WASP wouldn`t stand a chance here. Still, plenty of other Office/admin/tea-making jobs around.

Hi all,

Just scouring the web for jobs and found this advertised, for Comic Relief.

That's a great find and a good foot in the door position with a high profile charity.

So its in London?

yep, London based

That's not a photography assistant. More like a photographer's assistant.

I don't see what the issue is here, it's an office job in the publications department where you get to learn how a big charity runs, help with the organisational tasks, learn about contracts and the legal issues. You could easily come away after 2 years and then move to the next higher paid position in the industry. It's called paying your dues...

If this had been 5 years ago i would have jumped at it. I've worked on some stuff with Comic Relief and they are a nice bunch of people. That's more than enough to ask for in an office role in my opinion.

Hope someone here goes for it.

All true, but I feel you've missed the point a bit. They're advertising a 'photography assistant' position, not an office role. If they weren't trying to dress up the job as something it's not half of this thread wouldn't exist :p

I dont see the problem. They're not 'dressing it up' -- it quite clearly states what your role would be. It's no different from a Production Assistant which is more of an administrative/logistics/office role where you don't get to go on shoots etc. as much.

Somebody with the right attitude and the perseverance to get into photography would soon find themselves doing more 'glamorous' things out of the office. It's a way in, and at least they're being honest about it which is more than can be said about most media companies.

Unless you are gay and in a wheelchair

I'm a straight white guy looking for wortk currently. I am seriously debating putting irish down as my "ethnicity" (I have an irish sir name) and putting down I am a homosexual. Then when I get the job at the first attempt I can just say that I am a single gay guy, who is woman curious.

Would my plan work?

Better still, put two applications in, one as you, and another with a different name and ethnic background etc. Then if one gets an interview and the other doesn't, sue them!

I remember a story of someone with an Asian sounding name applying to be a lawyer doing this, his application with an English name got an interview and his own name didn't. He sued the company and they gave him a job!
