Honda has announced it is recalling 410,000 cars in the US because of complaints about their brakes.

Actually, I think that it will make bigger headlines in the USA whose car manufacturers will take every opportunity to pretend that they make better cars than the Japanese ;)

I'm not aware that many Odysseys or Elements are sold in the UK :confused:

No i agree, it makes perfect sense for the american senate to pour scorn over them.

Just, well what else have the BBC got to 'sex' up these days.. i mean no pig/swine/avian flu atm, superbugs are a bit quiet, no BIG FREEZE then BIG THAW :rolleyes: etc

thats all this is.

I've hinted at the "import vs muscle" scene that exists in the U.S. and there is a very large group of americans who pore scorn on americans who buy japanese cars believing them to be more reliable than their beloved american cars. You only have to look at the youtube comments on the jeremy clarksons motorworld clip where he critizes american cars to see their reactions to it.

Now the americans are just lapping it and using it as an excuse to point out that (as they see it) they arent any more reliable than american cars.
 
America, the only place where an Import Versus Domestic split exists. It is so pathetic. Go watch any Jap car video on youtube and you can bet that 9 times out of 10 some retarded yank is firing up some debate about displacement.

While I agree that all manufacturers have re-calls, and always have done. This is the second non-trivial re-call we've heard about on a substantial number of Jap. cars in a short space of time. This means one of three things:
-The media has it in for Japanese cars. Have they been advertising less lately?
-It's a sign that build/design quality in the country is slipping.
-Chance.

I'm going with chance.

Hyundai Motor will recall about 46,000 of its new Sonata sedans here and another 1,300 in the United States after the cars were discovered to have defective door locks, company officials said Wednesday.

The recall comes at an unfortunate time for Korea's largest carmaker, which hopes to avoid a Toyota-like public relations disaster amid increasing scrutiny over vehicle malfunctions.

Safety concerns have forced the Japanese auto giant to recall about 8.5 million cars worldwide and its President Akio Toyoda is set to testify before the U.S. Congress over the issue.

Hyundai will report the decision to Korea's Ministry of Land Transport and Maritime Affairs and the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the next few days and announce a voluntary recall in both countries sometime in March.

According to Hyundai, the hinge on the front doors of the 2011 Sonata sedans could get stuck and prevent the door from closing when a passenger pulls down the door latch and holds down the lock at the same time.

The problem involves about 46,000 cars made in Korea prior to Dec. 6 and more than 5,000 cars produced by the company's Alabama factory before Feb. 16, of which 1,300 have already been sold to U.S. drivers.

The glitch was first discovered by a U.S. Hyundai employee and confirmed in two of the vehicles produced by the Alabama factory, company officials said.

"The same problem hasn't been found or reported in the Sonatas sold in Korea, but since we used the same component that caused the problem before it was replaced, we decided on a quick recall," a Hyundai spokesman said.

"Of the 3,700 cars produced by the Alabama factory through mid-February that remain unsold in the U.S., we will fix the doors by replacing the problematic parts with new ones and put them back on sale. No problems have been found in cars manufactured after mid-February."

The recall is obviously a letdown for Hyundai, as the first 2011 Sonata sedans, the company's most anticipated product in years, have just started reaching U.S. dealers.

The car, named YF Sonata here, has been the top-selling vehicle in Korea since its release last October.

The new Sonatas have been garnering generally positive reviews in the U.S., with several media outlets rating the cars highly for its design, fuel efficiency and smooth driving.

According to the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, there were 123 consumer complaints involving the new Sonatas issued in the last three months.

The agency said that 49 of the complaints were related to the gearbox or other electrical issues, 45 involved the wheels and other driving problems, while 11 were related to engine problems.

Hyundai’s strength in affordable, fuel-efficient cars allowed it to be one of the few major automakers to weather the global economic crisis and finish 2009 on a high note.

The company particularly benefited from an improved reputation in the U.S. market, where sales rose more than 8 percent last year.

Multiple Hyundai recalls for brake lamps and rust issues affect nearly 1M units

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Hyundai have initiated recalls on 963,305 vehicles as part of four separate campaigns. The first recall, blanketing over one half million late-model vehicles, is nationwide. The other three recalls, all corrosion-related on older vehicles, are limited to the regions of the country where salt is used to de-ice roads in the winters.

The most widespread recall, affecting up to 531,894 2005-2008 Accent, Azera, Elantra, Entourage, Santa Fe, Sonata, Tucson, and Veracruz models, is NHTSA Campaign 09V122000. It is focused on a malfunctioning stop lamp switch that may prevent brake lights from illuminating when the pedal is depressed (the same switch may also cause them to stay lit after the brakes are released).

The second recall, affecting up to 175,765 1999-2004 Sonata, XG300, and XG350 models, is NHTSA Campaign 09V124000. That recall, limited to America's so-called "Salt Belt" states, is centered around potentially excessive corrosion of the front sub-frame due to winter road salt applications. If unnoticed, the lower control arm may separate from its mount.

The third recall, affecting up to 170,610 2001-2003 Elantra and Tiburon models, is NHTSA Campaign 09V125000. Also limited to the salt-belt states, the affected component is a failed lower control arm due to excessive corrosion.

The fourth recall, affecting up to 85,036 2001-2003 Santa Fe models, is NHTSA Campaign 09V123000. Again limited to to the Salt Belt states, the recall is centered around the possible internal corrosion of the rear trailing arms in the vehicle's suspension.

In all four recalls, Hyundai dealers will inspect, repair, and replace defective or damaged parts at no cost to the owner. In some situations, rust-proofing material will be added to chassis areas to arrest the corrosion process. The TL;DR version is basically, Hyundai have also issued massive recalls which more or less slipped under the radar. Just under 1m cars in the states alone.
