I'm not in any hurry to find one yet just wondering whats out there. Funds permitting I'll be able to buy one December/January just after my car insurance is renewed.

At the minute I've taken a quick look at few bikes and am interested in 4

You can tell the style I like from the Images I just don't which is best for a novice. On another note how much would I roughly be expected to pay for insurance on a bike, I'll be 21 and live in a class D insurance risk area(if that actually means anything)

hi mate, best thing for insurance i found is use go compare, give them some 2nd hand bike details and check your prices but for sports bikes it can be expensive but if you have no claims bonuses on your car you may be able to carry them over.

i my self am 20, just re insured my Honda MTX 125 motorbike which is a decent bike and is my first.

for a novice / beginner rider i would strongly reccomend a 2nd hand bike, if your into the whole super bike is looking thing, i would take a look at the old apprillias but they can take a lot of maintinance and 2nd hand ones can usually have some nasty issues.

HONDA NSR's are nice too.

what ever you do, don't go for some import thing, go for a well known make

honda
yamaha
suzuki
kawasaki

etc

Go for the Honda, apparently very reliable and will last.

My insurance was £300 fully comp - £150 compulsory excess, £0 voluntary excess, legal cover and helmet and leather cover on a new CBF125. Not sure what the area is classed as!

I'd echo both of these, although my insurance was £320 TPFT with no excess.

Don't buy cheap knock-off imports. You'll be left with a big pile of rust after 6 months.

yep stay away from the cheap import stuff. My brother bought his wife one, much like the hyosung you posted. It was so cheap and the engine felt like it came from a 40 year old tractor. it was shocking. it was also sold 4 weeks later.

The honda will run all day every day as will pretty much any of the big jap manuafactures. kinda like the little Yam though

The hyosung is a good bike for the money a mate had one not the quickest of bikes due to being similar size to a 650 but it will get you used to the size of a bigger bike.

I'd steer clear of the aprillia they're nice bikes and go like stink but without regular maintainence they tend to go bang

This. The apprentice at my place of work has an RS 125, and he's had nothing but trouble with it. The ex-cleaner also used to have one, and it suffered from some semi-terminal engine trouble (can't remember what exactly, was about 18 months back).

Cheers guys, looks like it's between the Honda CBR125 and the Yamaha YZF R125.

Anyone know which of these is likely to be better for a complete novice? I'll be getting some help with bike maintenance from my dad but don't want anything huge to undertake.

The intension is for the bike to be used purely for social means with very rare and short A-road trips to friends.

Personally I think I'll end up with the YZF unless I hear of any horror stories about it.

They will both be very similar. As are most of the big jap equivilant bikes. Specs are pretty much identicle. Just go and try and see them both. Sit on them as well if you can. Then buy the one that you thinks looks the best. I personally think the yam looks the sharper but everyones different. I dint think you will go wrong with either of em mate.

personal choice, yamaha for speed and accelloration :P

honda for reliability ( i have a honda)

as tehyr both sporty bikes they will need more maintainance than other bikes, have you considered enduro's?? more fun to ride i find :)

I have a YZF-R125, and love it, ended up not getting a CBR because they were too small, haven't had any problems with it in nearly a year of owning it, except when I skidded it, lol.

Both will be similar to ride I imagine but I preferred the YZF because it was bigger, and imo looked better.
