A few weeks back I remember reading a post in motors about the new diesel engines and I can't find it anywhere..

Could anyone in the know answer this question?

I know someone who is interested in the new vw t5, it has the new engine which is a 2.0 140bhp instead of the 1.9 and 2.5 versions.

Can anyone confirm if there has been any advancements in the design / reliability of the complex clutch and diesel particulate filter for this new engine?

Many thanks

As diesel engines get more efficient, they become more complicated and less reliable, especially where the DPF is concerned.

The DPF has been a source of woe for many an idiot driver who bought a diesel and then drives 4000 miles a year in the town. The DPF needs a certain exhaust temperature (only normally achieved by a reasonably high speed run) to activate and burn off the contents. Driving around town doesn't achieve these temps and therefore many people end up with DPF faults.

Solution - don't buy a diesel with a DPF if you only drive 2 miles a day.

Do you know what else I hate about modern diesels too? The fact that most manufacturers (although interestingly the 'decent' ones don't seem to do it) have started fitting piddly little rubber bands to the front of them, instead of decent duplex chains, so after 3-5 years or some marginal interval you get hit with a 500 quid bill for a cambelt change, instead of it just thundering on indefinitely.

Most aggravating.

I bought my Diesel when I was doing 20k per year. I do about 6k at present and no problems. The particulate can cause trouble and of course turbochargers can fail. On the plus side they don't have complicated ignition systems which is often the cause of roadside breakdowns.

just about to buy a diesel with a dpf for my loverly wife to do 5 miles a day!

i get the 6 year old focus 2.0 petrol doing 20 miles a day :(

still the derv is on a lease so if it goes wrong it'll be fixed for free.

As long as the motor is taken on a decent run (20-30 mins on the motorway)every week the DPF should be okay.

I think I read VAG's have a light warning of DPF issues. But from my experience with my Mondeo (which I got as I was mean't to be doing big miles but my job changed) the book says every 500 miles you need to give it 20-30 mins run in a low gear with high revs at 50mph to force the DPF regen. I had 2 warnings on my car (even though I followed the book) regarding service oil (a result of dpf issues) - DPF regen on my Mondeo was a very smelly affair (stinky burning and the fans going mad).

I have a petrol car now but knowing what I know now I'd never get diesel for short commutes makes no sense as poeple above said - I was dreading some big bill tbh if I'd kept the car a few years.
