The 5830 does not suck so much....

Except that card does not exist.

No 3rd party is making an HD 5830 on a rev1 5870 PCB so that power test is completely pointless.

idle: 143W
loads: 303W
loadoc: 315W
loadoc+: 354W

loads = stock 800/1000
loadoc = (5870 toxic bios stock) 875/1250
loadoc+ = OC 1000/1375

Assuming efficiantcy of my PSU (as these are wall readings) are the same as that review site:

stock: 160W over idle = 322W

Slightly over the 5850 due to core speed.

OC+ = 211W over idle = 373W

Just for reference, vantage score with 5870 at same core clock as the 5830 vantage run. 5850 would have been a 100% better buy.

£130 more (for me) to get the 5870. That would mean to get the same £/performance you would need to score 28000.

Good luck.

A 5850 costing £220 would need to score 20700.

Your scores still seem very wacky, have you lowered detail levels or something?

Could someone please explain why the 5830 always seems to performs worse than the 4890, as it has the higher specs. Is this down to early drivers or?

I doubt it is driver issue. The 5830 has downscale a bit too much from its 5850/5870 big brothers, making its performance closer to the 5770 side instead of in the very middle between 5770 and 5850 (whereas the price is closer on the 5850 side making the 5830 very poor value). The gap in terms of performance between 5770 and 5830 simply isn't as big as between 4870 and 4890.

I was thinking of buying that £190 5830 on the OCUK site but...i still think thats to much. I want something a tad quicker than my 5770 and good at higher res. Or i could save for a new 4** series card from nvidia or save for a 5850.

It consumes more power than the 5850 and its a lot slower:

How come your CPU is clocked 10 mhz less but outperforms mine?

Thats a single 5770, so I suppose the 5830 is bette than one of those, but it still makes no sense buying one instead of a 5850.

Asus 5850 for £224 is better. It has Voltage tweak and an uncapped GPU overclock limit out of the box too.

Raven, looking at your GPU score I can only think my 5850 isn't running like it should. With my 5850 clocked at 950 I only get a GPU score around 16XXX, if I remember correctly.

Will have another run tonight, but if I am remembering correctly, then not sure why there is such a huge difference between yours and mine - and this is not looking at the total score which includes CPU.
