Hi all,
I have a BFG Nvidia GTX285 which I have connected to my monitor and my TV (Sony Bravia or something like that) using a DVI to HDMI cable.
My card supports audio pass-through, so I have connected the Card to the Mobo's S/PDIF_Out headers using the appropriate wire.

Now, I get video perfectly on the TV, but no sound.
I have the latest Realtek drivers for my MB (Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5), and latest Nvidia drivers. So I'm at a loss :(

Going into audio devices, it only shows speakers and my rear S/PDIF out port.
Neither of those make a sound on the TV when I click the 'test' button.

Have searched for a while on the internet for help with this, but haven't found anything useful so far :(

Help much appreciated,
Rob

You should have a wire in the box for the graphics card, this needs to be connected to your sound card and gfx card. (atleast thats whats in mine)

Also you may not be able to use a dvi - hdmi cable as this didnt work with a past 4870. You have to use the hdmi - dvi adapter that came with gfx card then a hdmi cable to the tv

Yes, I have connected the wire between my gfx card and my Motherboard (I dont have a separate sound card).

Maybe its the cable then, or I may be getting confused here. The internet says that DVI cannot send sound.
However, my GFX card, which allows sound to be passed through, only has 2 DVI ports.
I dont have an adapter?
Ill try to find my gfx card manual again, it mentions the subject briefly...

But windows is not recognising any playback devices other than my PC speakers and my rear optical s/Pdif out port..

DVI doesn't transfer sound, however the adaptor which you should have got with your gfx card is able to transfer sound into a hdmi cable. A dvi-hdmi cable wont work as i tried this too.

I presume you checked with your mobo manual to make sure the gfx card is connected to the right sound pins?

Ah, thanks for the help, I understand now. Actually I *may* have had one of those adapters, but if I did its long lost now :P

Any idea where I can get one from? :)
Thanks

Any decent hardware store..

Also, make sure you've selected the right output on your sound card drivers if you're connecting via optical.

But surely if a DVI-HDMI cable wont carry audio, then neither will a DVI-HDMI adapter?

According to the wisdom of google, Nvidia modified their own adapter to carry sound as audio isnt part of the DVI specification.. So I would assume that I need an Nvidia-branded DVI-HDMI adapter?

Sorry if Im being stupid :P

ALso I believe you need to connect the gfx to your motherboard for the sound. There are some guides on how to do this on the net, that should get windows to detect it.

I already did that! I said so in my first post :(
Dont worry though, everyone else has mentioned it too :P

I finally found the official Nvidia DVI-HDMI converter, so now its time to find a HDMI cable and test it :)

Hiya fella. I went throught the same problems getting my 275's to pass sound to my hdtv. Simple solution is buy the dvi to hdmi adapter from ocuk, mine was belkin and cost me 6 quid I think. Then make sure you have your spdif cable connected to your graphics card but also to the right pins on your motherboard. I had to mess about ages getting the right ones cos im useless!! If memory serves me right you need to connect the mobo end to the 2 pins closest together. Then all you need to do is go into sound manager in windows and select your tv speakers as your output and then my little ice cream cone the sound is your teapot!!
