Champagne Taste and Beer Money Syndrome ?

I have plans, but I have to deal with the reality. It won't be until I get to about my 40s when i'll be able to afford an awesome car or two.
Mortgage is the first thing on the list of long term goals.

This thread isn't about making investments or living in a nice house though is it? It's about splurging money (or dreaming of splurging money) on supercars. For someone to say they that they don't think about spending money on a supercar doesn't mean that someone doesn't have "ambition" in the general sense of the word...

Luckily for me my dream cars have always been sub 10k so shouldn't have too many issues :) much rather a dream house than a depreciating piece of lightweight metal though...
 
So long as I have enough money to run a performance car and take it on track I shall be happy.

The interest for me lies in getting the most out of a given car, rather than the car itself ( Although having something awesome to start with certainly would make things more interesting! ).

I am 18, however, so pretty much any car is out of my budget at the minute :D
 
Get up off you *** and work for it then, wallowing in self pity and putting your self down won't get you there!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm certainly planning on moving up to supercar territory, the only unknown at the moment is just when. It all depends on career choices, the effort put in and how much you want it.

I want it, and at 24 I'm starting to crack on!!!!! :)
 
I used to feel this way, to a degree. Then over time things changed:

I got an mx5, and realised I really could have a lot of fun in something cheap. Previously I thought I'd only have felt this happy in a ferrari or something.

I realised my 'dream car' was acheiveable if I really wanted it (elise/exige).

I work in games so the money isn't great, but I've already mapped out how I can reach my next goal. I won't be sitting there and crying over how cheap my Exige is compared to a Zonda or something.

Longer term, I don't rule out being able to get my less likely dream car (F40). Don't limit yourself, there's a comftable space between 'never' and 'one day'.

All IMO of course, I'm only 23, what do I know vs some of the old hands here who've experienced it all ;)
 
I don't want to be super-rich; if I can reach the levels my parents have I'll be happy. I plan to marry a doctor and that will sort out the family income enough for me to able to spend my life doing something fun like flying or sailing - one day have my own yacht :D

I know, but I was repsonding to panthro's comment, which diversified away from that. I was hoping to avoid having to point that out again, by quoting his comment in my previous reply, but apparently you missed it:

That to me suggests that he applies the same ethos not only to cars, but to other material things in life.

I think 'lacks ambition' is a fair assessment to make from that comment. You may not, fine; but it's not "stupid", which is a silly response to the discussion really.

Wish I could say this. I'd love a Mk4 Golf R32 (awaits the hatred) ok, a lot of money for what is a golf with a big engine :p On the wage I'm currently on it'll be a good few years at least for me to realistically be able to afford one.
 
You just have to be realistic, I'd say that the majority of petrolheads regardless of wealth would like to own something they don't have. Unless you reside in the rarefied air of the filthy affluent and you're rolling like Croesus, you have to prioritise and compromise. That said, there really should not be much standing in anybodies way of their dream car, where it usually falls down is the realisation of just what you need to do to get it.

As much as I love cars, they really aren't *that* important in the grand scheme of things to me anymore and I struggle to understand people who will make veen the slightest concessions in other parts of their lives to own a certain vehicle, have the latest plate etc. I don't think there is any wrong or right to it really, but surely those sacrifices make the ownership experience slightly bitter.

This pretty much. Except I'm not happy with my current car lol!

I certainly don't put supercars out of my reach in the future, however, hypercars are the cars I would certainly admit to not having thought possible to own, but as always, if given a chance it would be a dream come true.
 
Yes, but I'm quite content with cheaper less exclusive cars, I dream of having something like an S class or a big Lexus to waft in, a highly tuned R34 Skyline GTR to race around with, a couple of Yank tanks, one muscle car, perhaps an SUV like a Range Rover, etc...

Hell, I even fancy normal family cars just because I like the look of them, eg. things like a 406 or 407, an older E34 bmw 5 series, etc...

I'm almost completely the opposite. I could afford to drive more expensive cars than I do but I just can't justify the outlay of even a 5-10k car to myself. Once you get much beyond then I start thinking about how nice it'd be to be able to spend money on the house, or reduce the mortgage.

I'm probably the type of person who is happy with his home, as long as it's safe and my cars are safe near it, I'd rather live in a 2 room flat with lots of nice cars ( as long as they are safe from criminals&vandals), than a villa with one average car.

All I need is enough room for the basics, a bed, a tv, a pc, and a little bit of space to run/dance about on with music ( don't laugh :p).
 
I could afford a Ferrari but I choose not to as I cannot possibly justify it to myself and would rather release spare capital for my psuedo playboy lifestyle trading the stock market.

To me ambition isn't about acquiring material things. It's about wanting to achieve something, to be the best at something, to go somewhere or to do something... that's ambition. :) Material wealth is just something that's "nice".
