I see a lot of threads asking a very similar question of which hot hatch to go for. I was wondering if you guys could advise which you would recommend at different price points.

Eg. 3k, 5k, 7k, 9k

Those figures are just an example, but i hope you get what i mean.

You can get tidy-ish* 106 GTi's, Saxo VTS's etc for <£1500 now.

*Won't ever be immaculate at that price, mind.

I'm amazed that for £5k-£6k or so you can get a very good old model Honda Civic Type R which from what people have told me is a brilliant car, Honda reliable, fun, fast, good handling, good looking and so on.

Most i've seen in that price range have been fairly high mileage. I know often that shouldn't put a buyer off, but i cant imagine they're all motorway miles. How do the high mileage type r's run guys?

My 2c

SUB 4k

For me the Clio 182 is a great entry hot hatch. Excellent car if you can get away with the interior/french thing.

4k - 8k

Next up I'd have, and did buy, a Civic Type R. Excellent fun, cheap to buy, and the VTEC brings a different approach to how you drive - although the VTEC power delivery isn't for everyone, but is nowhere near as bad off VTEC as many like to make out.

8k-10k

This budget for me is a little tricky, nothing really jumps out at me as being that much better than a 7k Type R. Focus STs are a good shout and the Megane 225 F1 R26 may just be available for your budget.

10k - 12k

As touched on above, I'd go for an F1 R26 Megane. Bundles of fun, excellent in the twisties, and a turbo'd engine so easy (compared to my CTR) to tune.

These are my own opinions

3k: Probably a well sorted Mi16/GTI6'd 205 (Because nothing else in this price bracket is attractive to me)
5k: Not quite a hot hatch, but DC2, EK9 or 172 cup/182.
7k: EP3
9k: Focus ST.

3K Nissan Pulsar GTIR

5K Nissan Pulsar GTIR

7K Not sure

9K Lancia Integrale EVO1

They are all hatches :)

Vtec does nothing for me I'm afraid.

For under £10k, you are buying something older, with higher mileage from the bottom of the market - hardly fantastic bang for buck, is it.
