IIRC my gearbox was £3000 inclusive of fitting.

New box and fitting? You a 5 or 6 speed box?

Under warranty?

Either which way, we know you like your hands clean and have too many £100 notes flapping about ;) Me personally, and that car (I'd be arguing WARRANTY, regardless it shouldn't even need an oil change yet) if it came to it I'd do it myself and save £1600. :p

Im just going on what he said, which is that it was definately brand new.

I know renault and audi do.

Renault definately with shafts, even valeo with some of their 'french' clutches etc.

I see, so Renault and Audi, out of course, lay themself open to deception charges by fitting recon parts sold as brand new do they?

New box and fitting, 5 speed.

Yup. All because the return spring on 5th went. The old style BMW warranty really was a cash cow..

Why did it go? Design flaw?

Did you get the exact same gearbox model number back in?

They swapped the box for just that? I can see how you say cash cow, there is no reason why it could not be repaired to original condition given to a proper gearbox reconditioner.

No idea, seems reasonably common. All that was wrong was it wouldnt spring back to centre when you changed out of 5th.

Yes.

I totally agree, but they told me BMW UK had authorised a new box so I was not going to complain!

/Shrugs.

Dunno go ask them.

Renault and valeo do it 100%, I only had suspisions with audi so will retract that I suppose and have only 1 car ownership experience there.

Perhaps its the retailers with valeo, because its impossible to actually order anything from them as a person. I know clutch pressure plates are reused in kits supplied to motorfactors, you can tell. As are driveshafts for most older models, the cv joints etc. But they only use and recondition ones that are obviously within 'remit', anything goosed will be thrown I guess if returned in exchange from dealers. Saves on casting. That is where the discount from exchange comes from that is passed on to you, or used to be.

Renault list them as a new part number too, using valeo as the original OE supplier.

So its the dealer and motorfactor, unless valeo rubber stamps everything 'new'.. someone fudges the term. No one lists re-manufactured clutches for them, but some clutches turn up marked as such.

oooh a french conspiracy... hmm phone the rozzers!

It is only a small certain amount of items i've found, everything else comes 'new'. hard to renew plastic etc.

I'd be amazed if his invoice says BRAND SPANKING NEW on it. It'll be 'RMFD TRANSMISSION or something.

I dont know what it said but the OP is quite definate it was BRAND NEW.

All i am saying is that i cant see a major car maker then fitting a recon unit, especially considering the price he has paid.

Looking up the parts prices right now for a gearbox for a BMW 330i (Simply because thats the prices I can get hold of easily) and it says the following:

Rmfd-5 speed gearbox

No other part numbers are available other than the automatic box, which is also quoted as 'Rmfd'

I suspect the same is true of most manufacturers.

I think the OP simply misunderstood them.

There must be gearbox revisions.

Mental, I find that really crazy.

What was the book price on the 530?

If thats the case then i stand corrected.

My point is about descriptions, i for one wouldnt for example sell you a cubic zirc in place of a real stone and hope for the best that you dont find out.

Doing that sort of thing comes back to haunt you.

exactly

BMW dont exactly make gearboxes. They make cars, using components from other carefully selected manufacturers. Even if those parts and bespoke, and made to order exclusively for them. THey still wont make these sort of parts in house. It will get outsourced, and quite often the company that does the outsourcing does quite a lot of brands.

wow a lot of banter going on here.

Yeah it's a new box was given the go ahead from the head office in luton i think it was.

i went through it with them it's not a refurb or whatever, it's new they only would have given a refurb if my old box was salvagable which it was not has it had a whacking great hole in the housing. if it's not new they must have dipped it in acid, sandblasted it then polished it for me to a high shine

i've got the box serial number if anyone knows how to trace it i'll whip the trolley jack out 2morrow anh check th id plate for a manufacturing date

I can say valeo do sell reconditioned parts as new. Ordered a new alternator for my dads old car as new.....the slip in the box said recon but it was lovely and shiny and new looking. As long as it works what's the problem? I prefer recycling that actually makes sense.

Fitting a recon gearbox that may still have that inherent fault is a bit iffy however. I'd expect it would have been rectified.

OFFS it's new...... not used, not recon, not anything else, NEW i tell you it's got cast markings on it if it had been used before the small imperfections from casting would have worn of through normal use.

<<< off outside to take pictures for evidence lol

I love how people tell you in this thread that you are basically wrong and it's a recon like they know. Morons. I also see we got straight onto the main topic that's sure to help any ocuk motors thread, BMWs.
