I have just took delivery of a 7 month old A/g red tail. Its the first time i have kept one.He/she came with a large corner cage, I have been reading up on the way of keeping them, feeding, learning them to talk. Mine can already call its name & whistle. Its great company, & very quick to learn new things. I believe the only correct way to sex them is a DNA test at an avarian vet. I hope to have him/her a long time apparently they can live for 40-60 years. :)

What's wrong with it? ;)

Grats, the greys are great birds. My sister breeds parrots including a lot of rare types and supplies cages/ feeders etc so if you have any difficulty getting stuff you need send your details in trust she can give you a list of reputable suppliers.

Post some pictures.

Took these earlier today :)

Ebay: Parrot Cage - £45...

I wouldn't mind having a parrot but I'm sure they take plenty of special atention. He/she looks awesome.

Remember a farm near here where they had a parrot, it sat by the window and repeated what the farmer shouted at the cows in the morning, not repeatable here mind you.

We have one.

Hes just turning 4 years old.

Right little charactor.

They pick up stuff randomly. Ours is a mouthy little one. He knows how to answer back now. And imitates the phones, oven and microwave timers. And wolf whistles a lot.

During day if you leave the room he says bye. and at night he says goodnight

He has been learning all of this over the years.

Is yours clipped?

We never got ours done, and hes allowed out every other night to have a fly about - hes a bit of a retard and does fall off things and flys into them.

They are great fun. Awsome pets, ours is awsome wouldn't want any other pet.

This one was taken about 6months after getting him. I was geting something to eat after getting home from work. Just flew over and sat on my shoulder.

I'd love a parrot, had budgies which were cool, but they weren't overly tame and wouldn't choose to come to us when out of their cage

Got one here also, love the thing, hoping to take it off my mothers hands one day if it lasts that long....It's probably only about 10 years old now...seen one that was 80 before in a zoo! :p

Says all sorts of random things...It makes random noises mostly (Due to no fault of my own though ) Such as bomb noises, along with the explosion at the end! Muwhahah!

Calls my name as well, used to say varying things like: 'Come on', 'Dinner', 'Dinners ready' :p Then it would make a tapping noise as if someone was hitting a pan with spatula thing.

Says good bye when you leave the house as well....hehe! Goes nuts when the alarm goes on also.

Aww bless, ours copys the microwave as well, when you press the buttons, you hear them again and go...ah, its the bird :p

Love to let my mothers out more often, if it was mine i'd probably leave it roaming a fair bit...although it has the tendencey to destroy things....quite literally...came home one day and found one of those wooden weaved basket things in a complete pile on the floor :D

Ours is only allowed in 1 room, and only if someones in the room. Usually hes out when perents are watching TV.

My mum has one, she has had it for 4 years now. Very intelligent, like others have said it has learned to say good morning and good night giving you a kiss. When the news comes on at 10 it starts to yawn and say good night. When cooking dinner it knows what's going on and shouts for chips. It does make random noises/sentences but knows what to say back to you when you talk to him. He also loves to give cuddles and will sit with you and watch tv. Our cat that died three years ago, if we ever mentions its name he will meow and call his name out, so he remembers the cat. So many other things I can tell you but the list will go on forever.

Some advice would be getting the bird clipped as they can be painful when landing on you etc. Let it out as much as possible and talk to them, keep them happy or they can get depressed and pull their feathers out which isn't a sight you want to see!

My next door neighbour used to have an african grey and a blue/gold macaw (I think it's called a macaw)

If you snuck up on them, you could hear them repeating conversations between my neighbour and the milkman, postman.

"morning, lovely weather today"

"aye, crackin"

:D

Ive read that the parrot will get attached to one particular member or one particular sex in the household, i.e. it will take a liking to females only, so if any men go near it, it will not be best pleased. True?
Id love a parrot but wouldnt be able to commit to it as everyone in the house works a full time job.

Meh, ours used to love my mother as she basically nurtered it when it was a baby. But it's taken to me a little bit because I'm the only crazy cracker living in the house really
