Electric window switch surround - question on refurbishing one

Hi guys.

Getting onto tasks at hand with sorting out a couple of cosmetic annoyances with the Alfa.

1 - Gearknob - was scratched to buggery, new one ordered.

2 - Electric window controls. The plastic surround where the switches (and door lock mechanism) is scratched to buggery, to the point where scratching it with one's nail can peel off chunks. It's almost as if it's gone rubbery :D. Now, I could order 2 new ones (both fronts are ugly, rears are fine), but the idea has popped into my head of sanding them down, and spraying them black.

How would I best go about this, if this is the route I was to take?

Im thinking (could be miles off), sand it down with fine grain sandpaper, spray a primer, spray colour on (probably matt or gloss black, not sure), and then a protective laquer.

Any tips?

You could also potentially wrap them in 3M DI-NOC, although it largely depends on whether it would suit your interior.

And being an Alfa interior, i'm skeptical.

Will have a look Gajin, thanks.

Have rules out silver/carbon effec, that would just look tacky. Probably matt black or possibly gloss (piano?) black.

ps - your sig...RIP ralliart...missed something?

Agreed it takes a certain type of car to pull off carbon effect :p I think the interior is probably too nice in an Alfa :p

As for Ralliart - Ralliart Japan have ceased operations (or at least scaled down many)

Ah right, thought for a second the 7 had expired...

Yup, well i've got a second hand Alfa 156 window switch surround to toy with, it's actually in great nick, unfortunately the switch housing is of a different size to that on the GTA, possibly earlier revision, so of no use to me. Will experiment on that before getting to grips with my ones. Aye carbon would look out of place, however i'll have a gander n see whether there's the equivalent "black" finish Di-Noc...

Interesting product btw, never really looked into wraps and such. Idea has now popped into my head of wrapping the roof of the car in gloss black. A bit of knowledge and the mind does some weird things :)
