Arctic Cooling TwinTurbo Pro best for 5870?

Quick update guys. I've fitted the cooler last night and filmed. Just gotta edit the content and writeup the review. Should be ready by the weekend. Here is a teaser ;)

Just read the newest issue of Custom PC...in their labs test, the Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo Pro performed really well while running FurMark with a load delta T of just 37°C....almost 30°C cooler than stock cooler.

BUT...a very big BUT when they fired up Crysis, after a few minutes, the graphics became hazy, and when they rebooted the system, they were greeted with a series of beeps from the 5870 and no boot screen. The Twin Turbo Pro killed their graphic card...

i read this yesterday if only the poor guy knew sooner.

if u reading this get that sucker off ASAP

Hmm well, will have to see how it goes with mine but if this was a regular occurance due to the ARCTIC Cooler there would be a massive recall and lots of court cases I'm sure!

I personally would keep it on run tests and be very cautious. Could have been anything killed the customPC card.

you want to monitor the VRM temps if possible along with the core.

Good luck and keep us updated as this cooler is on my cards to buy :)

Only managed to capture idle temps last night will do the stress tests later. Idles looked impressive though - all under 30C.

VRM temps?

Read the Custom PC article - given price/performance their recomended card 'Scythe Setsugen' looks as tho it may be my choice - Anyone got one ? Whats it like cooling (vrm's as well as cores) and fitting?

Core, Memory shader etc were 27C and VRM was 31C.

Ok temps are high and VRM exceeds 100C. Took another look at the card and realised I had missed out a VRM chip LOL. With the current heatsink config. I need to remove some of them and they have lost their tackiness so need to get some thermal tape tomorrow before I carry on... good job i never b0rked my card!

May be the VRM chip was what got cooked on Custom PC's 5870 lol

Yeah easy to miss it out. That instructions manual really needs to be improved upon. Might as well be readin hieroglyphics they make more sense. No guidance whatsoever.

I'm just soaking the heatsinks in petrol now to remove the tacky film, don't want to put two layers on can't imagine it will work well.

I think the Scythe one works well as its a decent sink but the normal heatspreader plate fits on underneath it fine, so the black bottom plate of the stock sink still covers the mem and VRM's. The VRM area isn't massively cooled on that plate, but being connected to the very large plate gives it plenty of space for the heat to spread around on.

I think any of the bigger coolers are massively better but you really need to get a very decent sink onto the VRM's. So any of the big sinks + a thermalright VRM sink is the way to go.

But at £20 for that VRM only sink and with the assumption it won't fit future cards, its very expensive.

Still haven't got around to the basic 120mm fan mod as I've been so busy with work on the comp I haven't had a moment to get the gfx card out and mess around with it.

I think the last, 5-6 years of graphics cards I've had could all have done with far better than stock cooling and all had no real options for great coolers on the cheap. In the same time I've at most used a single sound card in the bottom pci slot, so every one of those graphics cards could have used a stupidly cheap 4 slot alu cooler with a proper fan on it, increased airflow + less noise and no hairdrier sounds at high speeds.

Anyone had any chance to test anything yet??

i would have paid a bit more for a better cooler had they had the option at the time, i can live with the whooshing sound that a fan is supposed to make but i have no idea where the random whine comes from. it must be the air hitting a certain part of the fins causing it?

maybe there is a simple way to fix this if anyone has any idea? or maybe it's just the design of the cooler that causes it.

Maybe he did a naf job of mounting the cooler.

I think Custom PC's beef with the cooler was that the heatsinks kept falling off the chips even though they followed the instructions to the letter.

I agree though that anything could have killed the card, and not necessarily the cooler. I imagine their 5870 has led a hard life!!

I think their conclusion that following the installation instructions to the letter could mean you end up killing your card is a fair one though.

I've always thoroughly cleaned the chips with isopropyl etc, not just relying on the 'pencil eraser' method mentioned in the AC instructions.
