Can anybody explain why this is happening in Facebook?

Last night I got a message asking why I had sent a strange link to somebody I don't really know but who is on my friends list.
I looked at the message and it was from me but I definitely didn't send it and especially at 3pm because I was at work and can't get Facebook.
Tonight I get home and receive 2 phone calls from people who need their PCs fixing because they clicked on a link in Facebook and both were from friends who said they hadn't sent them anything
My daughter is listening in and said that my 9 year old nephew had sent her a strange email with a link but he couldn't have done because he'd be at school at 2:30pm.
I looked at the link, hovered over it and told her to delete the message.

These links take you to a page which puts some kind of Trojan/Malware on your system and web browsers take you to pages which tell you you've got 700 malware on your PC etc and you need to buy such and such software.
Luckily I know how to remove this stuff.

Anyway, how is this happening?
Is my Facebook account compromised?
Any other info appreciated.

I've not received such messages on fb, but have on hotmail and live messenger. I usually delete them without clikcing, ad also let the originator know. I'd hope that someone would tell me if they'd receive something from me.

I've known certain scams that actually get your password, and then send spam out to others, resign in on your accounts, and spam the hell out of all of them.

Change your password on the machine, make sure theres nothing suspicious in the registry via "msconfig" doing that does the trick.

Explain it? You've been compromised.

Redo your PC, change your passwords, don't click silly links.

I'd have thought you'd have been able to guess that being a regular here...

Some people have sent me these over msn, make sure you have a decent anti virus installed, if necessary do a system restore to get rid of it, worked for me, i had one on my computer a few months ago which basically. whenever i clicked on anything it popped up denieing me accsess telling me to buy a certain program, as said above a system restore sorted it out. sure hope it hasnt damaged my computer at all as i use my mums credit card a lot on it, however she refuses to have her details stored online (probably a good thing)

Duh, I haven't clicked any links, I never click links unless I know where they're coming from however with this new one they look like they are coming from friends which will trip up a lot of people (and have done).
If I had clicked a link I would be getting the same symptoms as the 2 PCs I'm repairing now.

Redo your PC, don't make me laugh.
In 22 years I've only ever formatted 4 drives and I get at least 1 PC through my door every week.

What about your daughter etc.? What AV or malware software are you using?

Daughter is on holiday in Cyprus for the last 2 weeks.
I am clean, I am quite expert in removing this malware and know exactly where to look.
Besides my own removal methods I also use Nod, Malwarebytes and Adaware.
Nothing showing.

you got phished, change your password

there are loads of facebook virus' kicking around.

they all spread by sending fake messages. a PC you have logged into facebook on has been infected with the virus. Once they have your password it doesnt need to be on your PC anymore.

if your PC at home is clean, change your password and you should be fine.

someones been phishing for your password, best solution - dont waste your time on crap sites like facebook and tweeter :D

i never understood why people spend time on the things

There are certain advert sites which recently seemed to get scammed by the same bunch of folks.

Basically, a popup window will appear, and it will look like an explorer window, will advertise a scan, find malware and encourage the user to click to continue and install to remove the malware.

Some of the may forum popup advertisers either allowed this advert thru their system or purposely got paid to allow it.
I've seen it on severla different sources and different machine, and as it is a very nicely concocted popup advert most systems won't block it.
Popup blocker fails on it.

It will appear on system which are not infected, but if folks follow the removal links, they will infect themselves.
This might be what is occurring.

Meh...its no different than the links friends send you in msn...I just ignore them

But yes, change passwords on facebook and secret questions etc if there are any

I probably spend about 1 minute per week on it basically to look at photos I've been tagged in.
However, I could never **** Facebook off when I spend so much time here - what's the difference really?

Please bare one thing in mind, my PC is not infected but the 2 I am repairing are.
It looks like I've got another one coming tomorrow if my wife gave me the right details.
