I've seen all the useful tools in that thread above and I am currently running an Error scan with "HD Tune 2.55". Is this the right tool to be using? Is there something else I should be doing to check for a dying HDD?

I use SpeedFan for disk checking. Make sure S.M.A.R.T. is enabled in the BIOS and run a scan.

It gives you an online analysis after that points out anything you should be concerned about.

Download ultimate boot CD - it has a whole load of utilities for testing HDD's or just use the one from the vendor's website as jbloggs says.

If you are using any kind of offline HDD utility [i.e. anything you have to boot into] please please please be sure you are very careful about which options you choose. You can quite easily destroy data with one wrong move! :p

If possible, backup any important data [which you should have already done if you suspect your HDD is not well!] and unplug any other HDD before using the tool.
