Google Retaining History

Might come as a bit of a shock to those Googlemail users,
But for those with a iGoogle or Blogger account I would check this out;

Login, Proceed to Dashboard, Manage Data Stored With this Account,
Scroll right down to web history, Click Remove items or clear Web History.

You're then presented with a brief rundown on everything you've searched for whilst logged in, unless it's been disabled previously.

Mine hadn't, so you can imagine it was a shock when despite using private browsing everything was still recorded! :eek: :o

Anyway, thought I would share.
 
mine only goes back to the 14th of this month and there is nothing exciting in there and there should be :p


oh wait you got to click on all history.

Yes if you use notifiers or browser extensions and so on it will still track...
 
edit: it only stores history if you use the google toolbar or explicitly enable it.

Yeah, it was disabled in my account. I've never been silly enough to install the toolbar :)

You should be aware that this doesn't in any way affect the information Google stores internally, it's just a tool for you to use. Google will still retain as much of your browsing history as they are able to (ie everything you use Google search while logged in), it's how they make their money.

I don't use the toolbar either buddy, I use chrome now and again, and gmail, so generally leave it logged in.

Some people won't, I'm fairly sure there must be an option when you've signed up.

Well I use safari quite a lot, and I haven't logged when opening up private browsing. But it's still been enabled in the background is my guess.

I just thought I would share with you guys, I mean if your buying your girlfriend a gift and don't want her to know about it...... :P
 
I find search history useful and interesting, and it's optionally password protected separately. I'm sure google will be storing it if you disable it anyway just not showing you

This raises a couple of points in my mind:
- Your girlfriend goes through your browsing history? On iGoogle? Pussy-whipped at all?
- Only idiots gets caught out through their browsing history. If your gf has outsmarted you as easily as that then GTFO!

Well firstly, I don't currently have a bird, so all following points are invalid...

anyway, I don't care who looks at my history, I have nowt to hide.
All my pc's are owned by me anyway, so generally nobody else uses them.

But when I discovered this I thought it would help out others ;)

Oh and that comment was based on the IE8 adverts :p

for example I couldn't remember the model number of my car radio but I knew I had made a search for it before with the model number in it. Searched my searches for the search and found the search :p

(and this is info which is very hard to find with just a normal search)
