Complete change of heart - new priorities, new spec me

Err no its no. The E90 325i Auto is almost a second quicker to 60 as well as delivering the same fuel economy.

Obviously 0-60 doesnt matter - I never said it did - but its the only available comparator and I was just suprised that a 30mpg combined 207bhp 'sport' saloon offered such derisory performance. Why pay the running costs associated with 200bhp+ saloons yet not benefit from the performance?

A 320 diesel is quicker!

Oh well, should have ordered a 320d...never mind!

Are all the automatics adaptive? This is a pre-LCI E60. Although it has become smoother recently. I know how to adjust the peddle to change gear. ;)
When I first got it, it would take forever to shift up. It has got quicker though.. Still not quick enough.

Regarding the 26MPG, I find it too easy to fly past 3,000rpm in that car. In my Leon I rarely go much above 3,000. I short shift almost all of the time.
And I have a very heavy foot. Although I reckon that booting it to 50mph uses less fuel than slowly accelerating to that speed as the BMW fuel consumption guage swings back to the low end much sooner with the former..

Fair point, I wish you many miles of happy motoring :D

As far as I know all BMW autos have been adaptive since about 1996 or so, you'll be flying past 3000rpm easily as you're probably keeping the preasure on the throttle rather than taking it off a bit at around 2500rpm. Those BMW real time fuel consumption gauges are crap to be honest, I don't even know why they still use those.

No, I think you should either have stuck with your 'boring' Mondeo or chosen a newer 'sensible car' with decent running costs OR made a concious effort to buy a decent performance car.

Buying a slow sensible car with the fuel consumption and potential expenses of a faster car is just utterly pointless, I mean why?

I also find it interesting that you've spent the last month running loads of potential cars past people for opinion and then you went out and impulse bought something you knew nothing about and had never mentioned

It's nothing to do with us what you do but it seems odd you've gone from not being able to wipe your nose car wise without running past the forum first to suddenly getting something completely random, presumably because you thought it looked pretty and it was for sale 32 seconds from your front door.

What a strange way to buy a car. No wonder you get itchy feet with car purchase so often if this is the way you go about it.

And....here comes the white knight! At least a Lada would have been cheap.

Mate your driving a golf and are proud of the 09 plate.

I'd rather have his Saab than that thing you paid 2.5x the price for.

You were winning before you bought the Vectra, so thats not strictly true :p

Well not really. Anyway it's not that I know nothing about the car, I know plenty about them to make an informed decision.

Just because I've asked for opinion on quite a few cars, doesnt mean it's my only source of information - just so happens that if I'm perusing here of an evening, it's convenient and generally friendly to ask for an opinion here.

But what does it matter how powerful it is or how fast it gets to 60, or even what platform it's built on? It doesn't in this instance

It's a car that I enjoy driving much more than the Mondeo or a 330, it's newer and better equipped, that's the beginning and end of it. I appreciate you dont "get" it, it's not what you would have chosen; but turning the thread into personal insults and pedandtry about how I'd have been better with a car I have little or no interest in is uncalled for - it's understandable why so many people are put off from becoming part of the community here.

I dont see any personal insults?

I agree it often doesnt matter how fast or powerful a car is. But if this doesnt matter why go to the trouble of the Turbo version? You get the worst of both worlds, you pay the price of performance motoring but dont get the benefit. If you see what I mean?

i am absolutely not of the opinion you should have got a BMW instead, btw :)

There are other cars I would have suggested but they (and this Saab) did not match the criteria you gave us. Had I known you suddenly didnt care about running costs again I would have suggested the ideal automatic easy going compact executive - a 6 Cylinder automatic C Class.
