Is anyone lactose intollerant, apparently it affects 1 in 7 people, sadly im one of the one in seven but mine is fairly recent, apparently due to an infection/food poisoning!

Anyway, if you are, can you recommend any decent sites that list foods we can eat, im finding everything processed has lactose in it so there are no snack foods that are edible :(

Symptoms differ from person to person but bloating, wind, diarrhea, vomiting - it vareies on severity and of course how much over your threshhold you go but generally is limited to bloating and bad stomach/bowel cramps.

I have lactolite milk which is good, but am finding my "work food" (easy quick convenient) and snacks impossible as they ALL contain lactose.

I've got a few friends who are lactose intolerent and it certainly makes life more difficult for them but not impossible, most good (large) supermarkets will have a section for products which are made without lactose. You can get chocolate, cheese, yoghurt, milk etc and a whole variety of other things that I haven't tried.

Another possible option for you is tablets that contain an enzyme which helps to digest lactose, one of my friends uses them on occasion - I've got no idea how good or bad they are for you long term so please speak to your doctor if you're considering that.

Soya milk is really, really good. Does take some getting used to though.

or....you could be like me and drink Lactofree milk. Taste's exactly the same as "normal" milk but no lactose ( or rather a very small percentage)

Lactofree cheese is ok, taste's a bit like mozzarella. I also read on BBC's website a while ago that stronger cheeses don't contain as much lactose. I have cut out a lot of cheese now and noticed a big difference but I am still naughty and have the odd pizza.

And I still have normal chocolate. Soya milk I haven't personally tried but my mum said it's disgusting :p i like the chocolate flavoured soya milk as it's really creamy.

If you like yoghurt the Alpro yoghurts are really nice. Lactofree do yoghurts also but i find the Alpro to be thicker and more flavoursome. :)

It seems they are finally bringing more things out to help the likes of us. It's surprising how much stuff contains milk. It's annoying :(

Unfortunately I'm also now allergic to caffeine. It all started after I was really sick years ago.

I am, Ive changed from semi skimmed to full fat milk for drinks and made some small other changes.

I took notice once my poo started to smell fishy, before that I just thought I had some intolerance to something else :(

Is lactofree normal milk which has had an enzyme added to split lactose into glucose/galactose? Obvious answer to lactose intolerance (in hindsight :( ), and would taste nice.

The trick with soya milk is to drink the sweetened one for a few weeks (or longer) then swap to the unsweetened once you've adapted. I only stopped drinking it when I became concerned about overdosing on vitamin A, for some reason they all seem to contain loads of it. Good for you too, one of the few foods that contains all the "essential" amino acids.

Edit: Wiki confirms, this is what lactofree is. Brilliant idea.

Having a background in catering, I know how difficult it is to get 'milk' free products as many things have milk of some sort hidden in them. Most of the supermarkets now stock a good range of 'free from' products that are made without wheat, milk etc.

Be careful if you buy processed meats as many packs of sliced chicken, ham and turkey are pumped full of milk protein.

I only found out about the meat thing after monday when i had a burger at lunch - i did wonder why i was in a world of pain on tues/weds until my consultant informed me of this!!

Lactofree (lactolite) milk is great, normal milk but with the enzyme in it to remove the lactose, its not cheap though but has a rediculously long dateline for fresh milk which is handy as its sometime on offer in tesco.

I've only found free-from foods for wheat rather than lactose, i cant even have cuppa soup at work anymore, i spent 35mins the other day in tesco looking at EVERY flavour of every brand of soup to see if any of them were edible but sadly not.

I'd love to find some snack bars or something that were lacto-free, they would be handy for work.
