Okay I've got two jobs offered to me, one is entry level management but you start off as a door to door sales guy, then a door to door sales guy with a small team, then large team, then an assistant manager (80% of time in office, 20% in field) and finally an owner.
The pay is good, the experience is good and the promotion side of it seems very good too. I could be earning thousands a week within a 6 to 10 months and around £500 a week within about 12 weeks. Problem is the hours are bad, from 10:30 till 8:30 but you'd also be doing a bit more afterward and I'd need to catch a train home (so home around 11), I'd have no free time to see my girlfriend for 6 months!!! and I doubt I'd like the role as much as the other. So basically money and prospects vs. job satisfaction and security.

The other job is with the rotherham council, as a social worker which I damn well want to do and would also have prospects to go to other council jobs but clearly not the training or fast tracking to as much money nearly as quickly. Basically I want to work in social care so it's a job I'd like.

So there's the problem really, job satisfaction, job security and time to me and my girlfriend vs. money, quick training to a high level and prospects. Bare in mind they both start in a few days so quick responses if possible please!!!

What is the pay for the council job exactly?

Also, you mention the council job "which I damn well want to do" suggests you have already made your mind up. :)

Council worker imho. The first one sounds like a load of bull to me. By that I mean what you have wrote is said by all of the sales companies (they are literally selling the job) and is the very best scenario should you sell to every house in the UK. Sales is very, very hard. I keep seeing these adverts in town saying 'earn up to £1000 per week!' and they're rubbish. You, theoretically, could earn that much but you never will.

Sales is a very hard job and only a few people will make it the second one sounds much better, sensible hours, looks better on your CV, etc.

Forget the first job, go for the council. As said above, 'could be earning thousands' is on the presumption that almost every address you go to says yes. In reality very few will buy from the doorstep nowadays.

I have a colleague who did it about 15 years ago in London, back then he could make thousands in a week and did - but other weeks he made nothing and the basic salary was a pittance.

Don't take the sales job. Sounds about as secure as a not very secure thing at all.

OFC, the sales job may work out better financially, but you may need the help of some persuasion techniques, i.e. a gun.

I've tried variations on the door to door jobs a couple of times (albeit not for very long either time) and while the prospects sounds attractive you'll probably find that not many people will succeed at it so although you'll be told by the employees how much they make what you don't hear is from the XX% of people who've tried it and failed to do it well enough/enjoy it and quit. It may be that this one is truthfully fantastic and manna will flow from the heavens as you start it but I wouldn't count on it.

Good luck with whatever you decide but I'd say job satisfaction should normally come above just chasing income provided either job will give you enough to live on without issues.

Screw the door to door job. I detest these people with a passion.

'could be earning thousands' is very different from 'will be earning thousands'.

I would do the job you enjoy:).
It's performance based, basically I can earn the thousands if I do get the promotions but I agree it's not likely.

To be honest I don't know, it was part of the future job fund (vacancy just passed on to me) and I chose not to discuss it during the interview since I didn't want them to think I just wanted money. I will find out on monday if I take it I guess.

Well that is the job I want but my girl was being crazy and telling me the opposite of whatever I said and it threw me off. She bitched for hours about the management job giving us no time together so I got the letter today about getting the council job and she started telling me to go for the management one because it pays more. I know I 'want' to do the council job but I was just wondering if people thought it better or a need to go for the other.

@ everyone - thanks very much for your input, I will take the council job :D

Money doesn't buy you happiness, not to mention it doesn't sound like you'll have time to spend the money even if you do earn £1k a week.

I agree and the problem is they basically seem to have an almost pyramid scheme kind of design where your constantly recruiting people to replace you as you become a new manager and when you get to the top you have to become a partnership or open up a firm in a new city. There's no seniority either so if I'm there 16 weeks I could be demoted if someone who is there 16 days is better than me. They're a big company though working with charities, Sky TV, RSPCA and other big firms and expanding quickly but I don't see it lasting.

I'm sure I will be fine income wise and I could always get more work if not, it's better than doing the management role though as I'd have no free time to even look for other work so once I'm in I'm practically stuck unless I pretend I'm sick to go to other interviews lol.

Council job. 10.30 - 8.30 (maybe morelike 9.30) is stupid. Money might be a bit less but its always good to get in with the council. I have heard off a few people that working for any council is always a good thing

Plus you get to get to see your girlfriend.

What are the hours and pay of the council job?

Surely you cant just randomly pick a job as a social worker with no experience or qualifications or anything in the field?

Correct- you need the professional qualification. Some authorities include the wording 'social worker' in unqualified posts as well- could be this, or OP could be qualified.

Think about the structure of the door-to-door job and what you're being offered.

Assuming a 1:5 ratio of boss to subordinate at each level.

1 owner = 5 assistant managers = 25 large teams = 125 small teams = 625 salesmen. All 625 of these people are being spun the same line as you. How many of them will actually make it?

I used to have the same opinion of the Aldi graduate scheme - lure you in with an audi and promise of making store manager within a year. Very very few would actually make it to this level.
