Best bang for buck hot hatches?

It probably was in it's day.

Still is. It can hold its own against newer cars of the same class in terms of drive and handling. But perhaps not in terms of comfort and equipment.

I'd still choose the drive of my Willy against the Fiesta ST, 197, 182 and others that I've been able to drive.

Mine has been awful... It's mainly wear and tear parts though. The engines are quite strong but they do get thrashed :P In the time I've had mine I've had 3x1.8 engines, 2x2.0 litre engines, two gearboxes (weak point) + clutch, all new suspension, new ARB and drop link bushes, several ECU's, repaired loom, wishbone with bushes, new radiator, 3 alternators, 2 lambda sensors, head gaskets etc etc

A long list, yes I should have gotten rid but it's been reliable as of late for a good few months :D I still love the car though, great fun and sounds amazing. I just can't part with it. Make sure you have a good tool set ;)

Good god.

Would like to make a point all the engines weren't my fault apart from one :D All the 1.8's were bad when i bought them.

Heh, and to think that I was kicking myself the other day for not paying more attention to Clios when I was looking at a car. Hearing that a 2.0 16V could make close to 200BHP with just cams and a remap made me think that I had bet on the wrong French Hatchback horse, but reliability definitely seems better on my side of the fence :D.

^renault stomps all over pugs these days for power. :p

:/

I'd have stopped after engine number 2 and got one rebuilt. That is some faffing about. :p

The williams takes it front setup from the 19, thats what makes the difference. ;)

After consideration I went for 1.8 F7P, i just like the way it drives. Although, I've heard of a F4R that is kicking about.. don't know if its worth it though. I'd need to rebuild it, then be left with a rebuilt 1.8 etc

In your opinion, of course.

My main choices were between the Golf and the ST, I didn't like the drive of the Golf, it was hard to put my finger on why, but it just wasn't anywhere near as fun as the ST, nor was it as comfortable.

It's 'cos the ST sounds the part  vroom tish bang pop!

Having owned both the VR6 and the ST, I'd say it was a pretty even match in terms of audible pleasure.

The ST does sound a lot cleaner though, and with the odd "tssh" and backfire, the ST just about takes it, if I had to choose one, IMO.

I've not heard a VR6 but love the fact that not much else on the road sounds the same (or even similar) to the ST.

Mine had an aftermarket exhaust that used to pop and bang like a good un :D They sound amazing at about 6500-7000 too :D

Miss mine! Bloody oil burners..

I had a Corrado VR6 a couple of years ago and absolutely loved the noise - I did look at R32s, but realised they are special for different reasons - mostly that noise, and the teasing VR6/R32 power delivery.

Funnily enough I test drove a Corrado Storm today. As soon as I put my foot down and heard that growl I had a grin from ear to ear. My Golf V6 is a much smoother and more comfortable car (and actually has a more powerful engine) but the Corrado's VR6 growl is so addictive :) I want to see another before making a decision but as the owner drove it away he obviously gave it some. I could hear it way off in the distance. So distinctive and quite a rare sight nowadays :) This will be a weekend fun far so all the modern toys aren't essential.
