Anyone Lactose Intollerant

rice milk I LOVE RICE MILK

Provamel I use, or I drink Chocolate oat milk cause thats delicious!! I'm not lactose intolerant I just don't like the idea of drinking another animals tit milk D:

Lactofree does still contain lactose so isn't any use if you are severely intolerant. I prefer it to soya milk but do still get ill when I use it.

As you've noticed it is really difficult to find lactose free foods, I don't think it is taken very seriously in the UK. The only way to really avoid lactose is to make food from scratch but obviously that can be a pain at times. You might find that things that only have small amounts of lactose are ok every now and then, especially if taking lactase works for you. I very rarely go lactose free because I'm a vegetarian and it's almost impossible for me, instead I'm careful about what I have and when.

EDIT: You might want to check out something like Graze for snack ideas - dried fruit and nuts don't contain lactose.

I really hate lactose. Bloody coming over here taking our jobs. You see 'em don't ya? You know, around. Send lactose back to where it came from. Bloody lactose.

No, I'm not. My friend is, he takes tablets with every meal.

Rice milk has stupidly high levels of arsenic in it, there aren't any good alternatives. I'm drinking 'moo' milk at the moment, it's 1% UHT milk, probably no good for the L.I. crowd.

OH NOES ARSE...NIC

Holland and Barrat does good amounts of vegan cheese and stuff I guess thats lactose free?

Try being lactose intolerant and a coeliac! There's not
much stuff out there I can eat

That must be terrible :(

Vixen - thankfully we cook from scratch most evenings so my main meal isnt an issue, its the work food thats a pain where i would just eat crap because its simple, quick and clean.

I did discover that some noodle snacks are lactose free, so am going to try those a couple of days a week as an alternative. We also got some soya margarine for cooking so i can make some muffins and flapjacks for the week :) Sadly i also have pretty bad IBS with certain foods so that resticts my intake of pasta, mushrooms, peppers, spicey food etc too! YAY!

I'm in the same boat it seems. I find white bread can really bloat me out so that combined with too much cheese or anything else that irritates my stomach can just get too much and I get very sick.

I find wholewheat bread and pasta doesn't bother me as much. Though I make sure I have it rarely.

It gets very frustrating. Some people moan at me about how annoying it is that I'm such a fussy eater. hmm yeah because it doesn't bother me how i can't just eat what I want

I feel for you, sounds very like how i am. Its a pain, i used to love eating and food but now i cant be bothered because its such a pain. My other half finds it particually frustrating especially as symptoms vary from day to day, and even hour to hour!

You can buy lactase tablets now that contain the enzyme needed to break down the lactose that you lack. Why not try them when you want to eat more widely?

My Gastro consultant who has been doing my investigations has not recommended them for me at the moment.

Things like that should be used after consultation with a doctor really.

Thread Necro!

I've just had a Food Allergy/Intolerance test done after suffering with bad stomach and indigestion for years. I have a phobia of vomiting so every time the tummy is upset I get anxious and end up having panic attacks, which is almost daily now. I'm underweight and never seem to put weight on as a result.

I was advised that is might be my diet that's the cause and if I fix it my problems may go away.

The results have shown that I'm highly intolerant to Cows Milk and Lamb with a small reaction to Beef, Pork, Garlic and Wheat, then a micro reaction to Gluten, Yeast and a few other bits.

Meal times are fun now...
I've pretty much ruled out take away food for the foreseeable and most restaurants are going to be out of the question too.

Joy!

They don't work that well for everyone. Next to no use for my wife.

My wife and two daughters are both lactose intolerant. We get by with the lactofree stuff, which I see has already been mentioned. Soya yoghurts by Alpro are good on that front.

I am but it's only mild so I can eat whatever I like just have to be aware how much I can eat before it effects me.

I got it after I had gastroenteritis lol.

Is anyone lactose intollerant, apparently it affects 1 in 7 people, sadly im one of the one in seven but mine is fairly recent, apparently due to an infection/food poisoning!

Anyway, if you are, can you recommend any decent sites that list foods we can eat, im finding everything processed has lactose in it so there are no snack foods that are edible :(

you can get this due to an infection or FP?

I think it can help bring it on.
Mine has got worse and I'm doing really bad in terms of managing it :(

I became lactose intolerant after having major surgery nearly 10 years ago, at first I was severely intolerant but after the years it has eased somewhat.
Make sure you get sweetened soya milk as it's much nicer, I get Tesco soya milk it's about 62p a litre.
I've tried the enzymes and had mixed success so don't use them any more. I find I need to just be aware of what I eat and I can get away with it to a point. I could have a couple of slices of pizza for dinner and then as long as I'm careful the rest of the day I'll be fine. However if I find I've over done it I look back at my last few meals and sure enough I'll have consumed to much.
You need to find how severe your intolerance is and then you can work out how much you can get away with.
My biggest problem is tomatos as the acidity cripples me but that's another story.

I became lactose intolerant a few years ago but think it has subsided now. Surprisingly the only thing I miss is cereal.

Mine was quite mild, I would throw up if I had a lot of it, but I could handle cups of tea and thin pizzas so it wasn't too much of an issue.

Apparently it can go away with time? Can anyone confirm?
