2 jobs, which one???

Why do you think you will have no prospects at the council?

I would say you have no prospects as a door salesman. It's all based on lies.

The council is a career, the sales job is well, a job.

Lifes too short to spend it doing a job you don't enjoy...

Take the job as a social worker, enjoy your job, spending time with your girlfriend and making a positive difference to peoples lives.

Take the council job, the door to door is a farce, could be this and fantastic prospects my backside!

If you want to be a social worker then do it, its a better job, more secure and it has real prospects.

Surely you cant just randomly pick a job as a social worker with no experience or qualifications or anything in the field?
I'll clarify sorry, it's basically working with social services, I'd be administrating and communicating with various social services like youth clubs and care companies.

I know it sounds that way but I was basically confused, I was open to the possibility of doing it for a while and moving on if people thought it would be a good idea to get money early and then keep trying to get the other job. I agree it was a bit dumb but like I said I was confused.

Good choice on going with the council job. Helping people (even if not directly) is incredibly satisfying and in a council then there are generally some excellent prospects.

Plus you'll get paid a decent amount (although less than private sector), have decent hours and good benefits (leave/sick pay/LPGS/etc...).

Sales work would just be soul destroying in the end and you'd probably find that to get anywhere then you'd have to seriously compromise your morals :/

with regards to the sales job, if you went for it, from experience i can tell you this, i'd have more chance of sleeping with eva mendes than the promotion prospects becoming a reality.

I did sales last year and was one of the best ones in the team and even then i made bugger all then when our manager got promoted it was the little runt from our team that was promoted because he was surgically attached to the managers back-end, basically the only way you would get promoted is if you like the smell and taste of your managers ****.

Nothing personal against you, it's just thats the way it works. Go for the council job.

I am in a (kind of similar) position, I work for a frozen food distribution company, they are relatively small, but the pay is ok for round here (£450-550 per week depending on shift) but I went to an interview yesterday with one of the largest food companies in Europe who offered to pay for my HGV training and give me a job which although the basic is pretty crummy (£17,500) the commission isnt and it could depending on my sales performance (its a direct catering supply role servicing long term contracts and ad hoc calls) net me over £40k a year.

I'm not so much looking at my problem from a money side of things, I can live quite happily on £17,500 a year, I'm thinking that the bigger company which does turn massive profits every year even now, and has operations worldwide, is a much more secure prospect given the state of the economy.

Do you think your boss would discuss with you how the company is holding up? You may not want to jump if your comfortable and secure but you'd have to ask to see if it's secure. I think the worst of the recession is over now too so probably not much chance of harsh layoffs now.

We get updates and Memo's about it, Its a fairly unique service he provides at the moment, but if it was something that could turn decent money, then someone like 3663, DBC or Brakes would be doing it.

As it stands, everyone in the transport industry whether its couriers, or hauliers are going to need to be looking at changing their fleets, changing how they operate over the next couple of years or they are going to cease to be, I'm hedging more towards a company with a 1.7 billion pound turnover large operating profits being able to cope with this as opposed to one with sub 2 million turnover who says he cant even afford to get a man out to fix the toilets.
