hi guys, i usually buy a new gfx card when i can double performance for £200 (usually happens every 2 years).

now seems to be the time since the powercolor 5850 is £220 currently but im trying to decide when to make my move. should i expect ati prices to increase or decrease after nvidias 470 and 480 are released?

We know the release price is $350. Which is £275 after vat. Which means £300 at day 1 release... unless the numbers are _really_ bad.

I dont really see the 5850 dropping below £200 until ATI gets an idea of how many 470s are flying about.

That is probably the most sensible thing I have read on these forums for some time :D

I doubt ATI prices will drop.

470 will be ~£300 and will be slightly less performance than 5870, 480 will be ~£450 and slightly more performance than a 5870.

Bearing in mind supply will be limited at launch we could even see retailers charging £400/£500 for 470/480

Prices drop on ATI cards! you having a laugh, the way fermi is looking we may see an increase...:D

This could be true if the following is:

GeForce GTX 480 : 480 SP, 700/1401/1848MHz core/shader/mem, 384-bit, 1536MB, 295W TDP, US$499

GeForce GTX 470 : 448 SP, 607/1215/1674MHz core/shader/mem, 320-bit, 1280MB, 225W TDP, US$349
Internal benchmarks reveal that GeForce GTX 470 is some 5-10% faster than Radeon HD 5850 and similiar for GeForce GTX 480 over the Radeon HD 5870. Interestingly, the TDP of GeForce GTX 480 is almost similar to Radeon HD 5970 which is a dual GPU card. Interestingly, our sources revealed that there are indeed plans for dual Fermi cards and the TDP of the card is probably gonna be mind blowing.

No one knows yet, but I doubt that the 5800s are going to be going down in price.

I'm thinking its going to be £299 for the GTX 470, £449 for the GTX 480 judging by the current information.

I'm pretty sure the prices wont drop. Even if they did, I think the prices would still remain constant due to exchange rates + demand

thanks :D

this is genuinely my fear, i feel like im a stock broker, although in fairness if the prices do go up im sure it wont be by a lot.

i guess ill wait for fermi and cross my fingers. a £20 drop would guarantee a purchase. please ocuk? :D

so if i may ask another question. which 5850 would you buy and why? there are 14 in ocuks range and im quite baffled by the difference. what should i be looking out for?

I'm in the same boat here. Can't decide wether to wait or just go for it. As for which brand of card, again I dont know. I really like XFX beacause of the card I have just now but a lot of people here really recommend the Asus because of the price and the features you get with it. I'm also considering a Sapphire and I also tempted to wait and she if OCUK get the Vapor X instock.

If you are a particularly pessimistic person you may even fear the prices of ATI's cards going up in the near future rather than down. Yields of 40nm parts from TSMC are already strained, and when Nvidia launches their new cards they will be strained further.

I am just glad I plumped for the 5850 back in October for a smidge under £200. A good investment so far! :D

There were 5850's flying about for 200 not long ago with dirt 2, if you want dirt2 and subtract that, the card was 170 quid. Im sure there will be more offers coming up.

Mine was an XFX one that came with Dirt 2. It's now £250 on Overclockers and is set to 'preorder'.
