Ideas for a first car..

Why is a car that will last higher insurance?

When i said "that will last" I didn't mean that in a 'reliability' way.. What I meant was, something that wont look silly when I am 19 if I am still driving it for example.

Depends what you mean by semi-good. If you want 17 year old street cred, you're going to struggle (as per the civic!). The Mondeo is a relatively handsome car in the right trim/colour but you arent going to pull in one.

A focus would be a bit better in terms of coolness, but you'll get less for your money and may cost more to insure

Was looking at focuses.. but yeah, less for your money does come into the equation! :(

And as I said before, if you avoid the stereotypical "17 year old's first car" car, then your insurance will typically be LOWER, not higher.

You're in a fortunate position considering you don't want a modded corsa/206/fiesta.

Anything in that class is going to be cheap to insure and tick the practicality boxes. Avensis/Accord/Vectra etc etc

think we've hit that "all cars bigger than a focus are old man's cars" thing again :p

Or shocker, cars with more than 3 doors.

The day I got a 4 door car, my hair went grey, I started to lose my hearing, and I gained an interest in potted plants.

:D

I wouldn't mind a 4 door.. however I just hate the look of all those recommended. Now, I know I can't be fussy due to insurance costs but eww :(

Who cares how it looks? They will be fast to you and you can shag your girlfriend in the back easier!

I'd hate the look of my bank balance after paying over 2k on insurance.

See weirdly I dont know that many pensioners but every single one I know, without exception, drives a small hatchback.

Hah, excellent observation! Little old people and little young people buying the same cars because... OAPs must be secret role models for the youth!

Also, OP guy, do you reckon the 'normal first car' things such as 106, saxo, micra, horse, punto etc. look good? The ones that cost 1-2k?
