EA follows Ubisoft, will sell titles with 'always on' DRM

The average causal gamer doesn't though.

And most big reviews give 90+ to any major game made by ea or ubi regardless.

Hell spore got something lik98%

Spore got an average of something like 84%, as did a number of their other games. I agree about good PR though, it's surprisingly easy to tell people what they like.

However, out of all the platforms I would have thought PC gamers are more likely than anyone to do their research (excluding games like the sims and spore). I do hope the people don't put up with this. I haven't seen the Assassin's Creed II sales figures, but I'm sure there are enough people that don't care/don't understand though.

It's not right that they are punishing the people who are buying the game, it's so stupid and they will not take notice until we flat out refuse to buy games with this draconian DRM.

My guess is publishers will stick this DRM protection in the game and have some sort of code server side so cracking would require engineering the missing bits which will take forever. Then after a year of so when the game is no longer popular release a patch so they can remove the cost of the servers.

PC second hand gaming is all but gone and now all they do is hit hard pirates. Do I think that there will be more quality games because of the new DRM, I don't think so. All that these companies want to do is maximise profits. Good games will always sell well no matter what DRM is used.

they dont hit pirates at all? they have the game or they dont have it simple as this.. if they do have it will be fully working/cracked and better than the one paying customers can purchase.. if they dont.. well they dont?? how often does that happen tho? :o

There won't be a big drop in sales because of DRM since frankly the average casual gamer won't even know anything about the security measures. People on the forums make up a small percentage of total sales and furthermore not all of us will stand by our principles, just look at MW2 boycott :p

Anyone else think EA were starting to get a lot better until this news?

Dissapointing really.

Yup. Their games got a lot better and they got rid of their annoying DRM. Now this.

Thats 3 publishers I won't be buying games from now; Activision (MW2), EA and Ubisoft (DRM)

All we need is a little education..

"Stupid consumer PC Gamer? Not sure why your PC has to be connected to the Internet to play your new favourite game? Download this handy program that will stop it"

And set up a massive repository of easy little executables that patch out the game without having so much as rename a single file yourself.

People have to remember that whilst even our current generation isn't the most computer savvy, we'll be replaced by kids using laptops from about the age of 5. I bet most of them will know how to crack the games themselves, let alone install a patch! :D

Personally, I don't mind DRM on games as long as it's reasonable and unobtrusive. However, requiring me to be connected to the internet to play a game a game that doesn't require me to be online (i.e. the single player part of a game like C+C4) is both unreasonable and obtrusive, especially if I also need to have the DVD in the drive etc. Obviously multi-player is unaffected in the case of C+C4 because you'd be online anyway. I appreciate that the *majority* of users have near constant internet access but it's still all too easy to imagine a number of situations where internets/servers/connections cease to function and you're forced to stop playing a game which you have legitimately paid for.

Constant DRM, nein danke!

You can still enjoy the game via piracy as much as the paying customers.
Except when you are paying then you can't play if;

ISP has problems.
Routing Issues
EA/Ubisoft Server go down.
They stop supporting the game.
Want to play it on a laptop while doing lengthy travelling/away periods and don't/can't always be online.

?

Although, if I ever had those problems I would crack the game so I could play it offline on my lappy or something.

how about playing the multiplayer component? the next battlefield might have this sort of drm.
and of course lets forget that piracy is illegal... hardly surprising though the ocuk community is full of pirates.

you don't have to be part of the community if you dont want to :p

On a different subject here I am surprised they haven't implemented a cd key system on console games yet ? so once activated for online you cant play a second hand game online anymore.Or even worse permanently linked to that gamertag/mac address on console.

so ea is now forcing a number of consumers to have to use offline cracks etc. due to people playing on laptops etc.... wow.. great thinking.. honestly don't know how they don't learn.. people will always crack, don't ruin it for the paying majority..

Well this new DRM always online trend is just fine and dandy...

Due to the old flakey phone wiring in our rented flat, our ADSL2+ Be connection tends to drop/re-connect around 0800 and 1800 most days. Today, we had some extra chaos throughout the day.

So is this "great idea" going to simply kick us out mid-game without saving our current progress? If so, labotomies all round at the distributing companies!
