Just read in the paper, five is to do two new series of fifth gear, in a bid to appeal to more hardcore motoring fans.

Ditching the studio, in favour of more track time, and ditching tom ford, and that other stupid bloke who's name I've forgotton. Keeping tiff, plato, vicki, and johnny smith.

Apparently planned as a response to top gears latest series which was seen to be more about getting a few laughs then motoring journalism.

Sorry can't find the article online.

Excellent news imho, I always enjoyed fifth gear really despite it being a bit crummy sometimes. And if they do actually make it more hardcore and less of an imitation top gear then thats fantastic!

Ditching Tom Ford?!?! He was the best part of the show I thought! Until recent series of course....

and that jonny guy... get rid of him!!!!

So they are keeping the worst part of the show (the bloody awful presenters) and making the rest even more tedious than usual.
Go five.
Honestly if people were really interested in which one of the mill hatch back was better they would have watched it before.

Top gear is good because its silly, its not a consumer program, its middle aged men larking about.

Johnny is cool. He seems really down to earth.

Just googled as I wasn't sure which one Tom Ford was. I assume the long haired fat one. Anyway, safesearch was off!!

And i'd rather have road tests than track time :(

VBH, Tiff..........I'll give it a miss then. Both are crap broadcasters in my view, VBH is just annoying and Needle is also whiny and of little charisma to my mind. Sure, he can hold a car sideways and make it go quick but his bravado is tiresome and he's like a hyperactive chain saw.

I see they still haven't worked out why Top Gear has become so successful since it's return and Fifth gear never really has...

Great news me thinks, for one its a motoring programme thats focussed on motoring fans, despite history shows that this sort of programme fails, who knows! Especially as many have grown bored of Top Gears format.
Secondly Plato, Tiff & VBH are all entertaining to watch when sliding around a circuit, especially when they are up against each other. Who honestly doesn't want to see a couple of nice cars being pushed to the limits around a track by decent drivers?
I also reckon Tiffs persona works well against Platos although VBH could do with cutting out the squeeking as its gone from sweet to irratatingly predictable.
And Johnny Smith is a massive car geek, he may even have started a regular column with evo magazine.
Provided this programme isn't just 30 mins long & is based at a decent circuit (Cadwell Park would be sweet despite its far away location) & they actually get interesting enthusiast cars, new or past... this might just work...

Agree with comments about the presenters, but if it means I get to watch all the latest cars being tested then I'm happy really.

Top gear is just irritating in its lack for proper road tests now. Gone are the days when they would actually make a quality piece of road test film like the below imho.

Why don't they give chris harris a job though! I would dearly love for him to get a spot on that show. Trouble is he really would make them all look pap tbh.

Neither have many of the posters here. Hence so many people asking for a "proper car show" and forgetting that's why Top Gear got taken off the first time.

By the same token many many many viewers are now quite bored of the Top Gear format, even the show producers have voiced concerns. Looking at how popular a number of online car review videos have been shows that there is an audience for this type of show, provided it is aired at a decent hour.

Odd that the BBC, a public service broadcaster, makes its motoring consumer program into a ratings-seeking circus, while a commercial broadcaster tries to capture whatever market the original BBC Top Gear format had.

Harris, Sutters and Bovingdon in weekly big budget 1 hour episodes in HD, with a Driving Legends segment and a topical piece answering some of the old forum arguments...diesel v petrol, fwd vs the world, FI vs NA, Golf vs Rolls Royce etc. All with a hard tech and numbers for the beardies.

As it shows cars for an hour I'll be watching it but the presenters need stoning.
