Asus 5850 Tweak settings Ati Overdrive

The thermal engineers at ATI will be a helluva lot more smarter than the armchair "experts" on the internet.

I bet they also don't mind if your card claps out after 18 months and you have to buy a new one either ;)

Remember with the Asus we are talking about overvolting which I doubt was taken into consideration by these ATI experts when they worked out the fan profiles for cards at stock volts.

The custom fan profile works just fine for me, highest I have been is 72C which is pretty cool for a graphics card and plus at 70 I can only just stand the noise.

The spotcool really helps NB, processor and the gcard, however had to turn is down to 80% of low settings because the thing does whine a bit- as is it is silent.

I genuinely think that the ATI lot have really played things on the safe side with this card...I wouldn't worry too much.

I found with my card that at complete stock it idles at 400/1000. If I overclock anything by even 1Mhz then it drops to 157/300 and because im using 2 monitors that causes issues with flickering.

No don't. Auto Tune is a joke. I ran it on my Asus which took a couple of hours (testing each increase along the way). In the end it claimed my card was stable up to the slider maximums of 1200/1400 on stock volts! Yeah right...

Pretty much all 5850s will do 825/1150 on stock volts. Some will even do 5870 speeds 850/1200 on stock. Above that you will need to increase the voltage a little in which case most will do 900+.

870/1200 on stock Voltage here, using MSI AB. Card is XFX 5850 XXX Edition (BIOS not flashed)

i am only on 775/1125, as i was under the impression that any higher doesnt really give you anything extra

i fi attempt to go beyond this, will i be able to turn the settings up in games like crysis warhead?

currently on 4x AA and GAMER throughout

Sapphire Toxic @850/1200 Stock volts, using MSI, Profile 1 set for defaults and runs at 400/1125, set as 2d profile, profile 2 is set for 3d and runs 850/1200, have set the fan control on witih a custom map, and playing BFBC2 at Max settings never goes over 56c with the fan around 40% :)

Going higher will give better results... at stock 765/1125, i got min FPS around 18 in BFBC2, at 850/1200 min FPS is 26 :)

that jump seems quite significant, i wish i knew more about OCing gfx cards so i was more confident in it, just learnt about it for CPUs but gfx card seems to be more complex without ASUS firmware

You don't need Asus firmware, mine does not have it, in fact being a Toxic, it cannot even be volt tweaked either, which is why mine is running Stock volts :)

it just seems to be more work

as i understand it, if i use MSI afterburner with it and amd tweak tool to overvolt, it will not clock down in 2d mode? so every time i play a game i have to activate a profile? and if i clock/volt high enough i also have to set a manual fan speed?

i worry about damaging it permanently!

Not at all.. you save the cards Default settings as Profile 1, then save your OC settings as Profile 2, then go into the MSI settings and under the Profiles tab, set the 2d profile to use Profile 1, and the 3d profile to use profile 2, works fine for me, every time I boot up, card runs at 2d clocks, but as soon as I run a game it load Profile 2 and runs the 3d OC settings fine. then when I close the game it goes back to 2d clock automatically :)

Edit: See my thread on it here... http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18124884

oh

so for 3d apps it will automatically clock to the higher settings? and once you leave the 3d app it will automatically come down to 2d settings?

seeing as im new to this ill try this out jsut using MSI, i have just seen the 2/3d settings page,

once ive updated from 9.12 to 10.3a drivers ill have a go,

thanks

UKDTweak do you have ccc installed as well to tweak 3d settings? or do you just use the settings in the games themselves? also does overclocking effect the graphical side of games, like would i still need to put graphic settings on high even tho i have overclocked the card?

Im using the 10.2 drivers by the way

I have CCC installed and use it to set AA at 4x and AF at 16x, turn off V-sync etc... but the Overclock is purley done in MSI. I have not seen the OC cause any graphical problems, but you will still need to goto the game video settings page to set the game to look as you want it too, re high textures etc..

Thanks for that mate, i was reading thru the thread about the 2d & 3d profiles, i have not oc my card at the mo but when i look in ccc i see my settings at 150/300 when i am browsing kinda weird. When i indeed do oc do i just need to save that profile in msi and apply it as and when i want to use it? cos i dont wanna run 850/1100 when im just on the net etc

thanks for your help buddy

Simply run MSI and set it to start on windows startup...

Click Save at the bottom of the page and select 1.
This will save the Default settings for your card as Profile 1.

Now start Overclocking... when you have set a Core and Mem speed to test, click Apply, then Save, this time click 2, this will save your OC settings as profile 2.

Now open the MSI settings page and click the Profiles tab, you will see Automatic Profile Management...

Beside 2D Profile click the drop down box and select option 1.
Beside 3D Profile click the drop down box and select option 2.

Now save and close the settings page so your back to the standard MSI front, click profile 1 and Apply, your card is now at default settings with Powerplay, then minimise MSI, or move to a second screen if you have one, and run a game, if you have a second screen you should be able to use third party monitoring apps or use the MSI Afterburner built in monitor and you should see your clock ramp up... then exit the game and the defaults should re apply again.... job done!

If your card is not asus or msi you need to flash the bios to keep the powerplay setting, which is well worth it.

Be very careful doing so but it isnt rocket science- check the sticky thread.

for me peronally although i want to do it, i cant bring myself to gamble with £200, im not confident enough!
