Porsche Panamera

Not considering the new Cayenne? Not seen a new one in the flesh, but it looks a lot nicer in the photo's. Looks like they are doing a Targa / glass roof version too, which would be nice to see the Alps rolling by!

We had an RR Sport before the Q7 so have first hand experience. The Q7 is such a superior vehicle in every way. It only has 1 problem - it's HUGE.

Non-Sport RR is far too rolly and slow although a great off-road tool.

Go try a real RR. The new 5.0 V8 is 5.6sec 0 - 60, hardly slow. Got all sorts of cool features on it now. Go try, thank me later. :)

I've owned both.

Q7 destroys the RR on comfort, technology, build-quality, reliability and performance (supercharged fuel-drinker excepted). It's like stepping out of a Honda and into a Bentley.
Really? What age/trim/engine RR did you own out of interest?

The one thing I had noticed about Range Rovers was that unless you went for ridiculous engines they are indeed beyond slow. The TD6 will lumber itself to 60 in 14 seconds, for example. Sure, its a heavy car, but a 3.0 TDI Q6 or an X5 3.0d is considerably quicker. You don't want to race in an SUV style car but you also want to have some shove when you need it for overtaking and I just dont think the normal Range Rovers do.

I did, however, adore the interior.

I don't think they make the TDv6 in the RR any more, only the RR sport. The TD is now a V8 that's ~7 sec 0 - 6.

My friend chopped in his Q7 (took a bath on that) for the new RR Sport, he's had it a week now and I'm very impressed with it as a passenger, apart from the engine. They really need the SC V8, I think there have been a lot of changes with the 2010 model. Don't think it could hurt to have a look, if you feel that the difference is that huge between the Q7 and old RR Sport you're bound to be impressed with what they have done. If you want any specific pics, he's only 10 minutes away.

0-100mph-0. There are some RR videos highlighting the new handling package vs the outgoing model on youtube. A couple of passenger rides has definitely piqued my interest anyway.

Apart from that, I guess the ML63 AMG, X6M...I would have added the 2010 A8 in W12 guise or even an S8 (comparable ride quality with a Panamera 4S I would have thought)...but the W12 has been dropped and no idea if the S8 will show up, probably a VAG thing with Porsche in the future. There is always the A8 4.2 FSI/TDI, not quite as quick as the 4S, but ticks every other box with ease.

As far as the Porsche, I'm sure it's massively competent but I really struggle with the looks, not sure if depreciation wouldn't be an issue with it either.

The old man is thinking about a Panamera, he is 61, I dont need to say anything else.

My old man is 66 and looks about 50. He swapped his RR Sport for a new RR Sport with the new V6 and it's a cracking bit of kit, he also sold his Cayman S and is considering a GT3. Age is what you make it...

In your dads case, getting old just sounds expensive.

;)

Different car according to my father. He says the new RR Sport (he has a 2010 model) is so much sharper and nicer to drive than his (I think) 2007 model and the new 3L V6 is a vast improvement over the old one (2.7L I think?), which a chap I know who owns a couple of RR/LR dealers confirms. His view is the new V6 D is the pick of the range....pardon the pun.

The diesel is what my friend has, it's a great motor but personally I'd want a bit more oomph. Irregardless, the ride is fantastic, it's really lovely inside and comfortable as hell...it's got that quality feel that's hard to define. Like I said, left me impressed as a passenger and I've been having a good old nose about them.

He enjoys his retirement via spending money on cars and houses abroad. I love being an only child.

Not for long though...ive started adoption proceedings with your dad..he said hes more than happy to boot you out and i replace you:p:D

If you're having trouble parallel and reverse-parking it Spie I'm sure you could get a few lessons to help :D :D

IMO the Porsche is in the same vein as the X6 it seems a bit..pointless..a SUV coupé seems to have all the costs and running expenses of a proper SUV except compromising on the capacity aspect. :p

A few options that spring to mind are:
- New Jag XJ. But to my knowledge, doesn't come with 4wd and I don't know about space for skis. Having said that, probably a lovely car.
- If you want something a bit more normal, Volvo V70 T6 AWD. Vaguely quick, very comfortable interior. The only real problem is that it might be a bit too "common" for what you're looking for, and is hardly a looker.
