My contract was up for renewal this week with 02, I wanted an iPhone but couldn't justify the prices so thought i'd see what BlackBerry had to offer.

Anyway, as luck would have it my mate was working in the upgrades department this week and has sorted me the following:

Free BlackBerry 9700 (didn't like the look of the Storm 2)
600 mins
Unlimited texts
BlackBerry bolt-on

He's also managed to keep my £15 loyalty discount on there so i'm getting the lot for £27.50 a month, pretty pleased with that.

I'm gonna head over to Crackberry and see what's what but is there any must haves that you guys would recommend?

Cheers :)

That is a good deal. CrackBerry is a very good site...some must haves for me are Snaptu(RSS reader for all news/sports/scores etc), Facebook and Google Maps..

As gamer said head over to crackberry anad join up to the forums...must have apps??..plenty to choose from but the ones i have on my 9700 and Storm 2 are:

Berrybuzz...allows you to change the colour of your LED notifications to all sorts of different colours...theres a free version but only does incoming calls i think whereas the full paid version allows you to change email, sms, mms, blackberry messenger amongst quite a few others. Probably my fave app and i use it on both my Storm2 and 9700

Berryweather which is a weather app...again free or paid...free is very basic but the full one allows you to have as many weather locations as you want.

I have quite a few others as well both paid and free but those 2 are must have's imo.

I get the same deal for £30 a month but I didn't have your discount. Think you mate isn't pulling out all the stops. Good phone though. Very happy with mine!

I didn't bother going through retentions or anything, the tarrif should be £42.50 so with a £15 discount it works out at £27.50 plus I didn't have to pay the £50 for the phone, happy with that personally.

It got delivered today and i'm pretty impressed, find it quite hard to text but that's probably my fat fingers. :p

The messages - it groups all their messages together, and then above, it groups all my replies? Is there any way of organising them so they display in the order the conversation reads - that would make more sense surely, it's just confusing at the moment working out which is the new part of the message etc.

Also the quality on YouTube seems to be awful. I've read that the BIS servers compress their data so is this the cause? Any way of getting round it? They're pretty much unwatchable tbh.

And another thing - how do I make sure all the programmes are exited? I'm holding down the menu button and scrolling to the program, clicking the menu button again and hitting "close" yet it still seems to remain open?

Cheers.

You can't close some applications, like BBM, they are always running.

Youtube is and was never any good although people are saying lately its been slightly better but i dont use youtube on any of my BB's....due to the way BB's compress their data.
If your wanting a phone that plays youtube really well then your better off with the iphone or a Winmo phone that have dedicated youtube apps.

As for closing apps?/...there are 5 that will never close and will always run...they are the home icon, messages, bbm, browser and phone.

Otherwise any other 3rd party app, you just press the BB button which is next to the upside down phone icon and scroll to close or exit and that will shut down any 3rd party apps.

The message part??...click on the messages icon then click your BB button and scroll down to message options...in there click on general options and you have various options that you can adjust ie if you want to hide read filed messages then select yes and you can also hide sent messages there as well.

On my 9700 i only have my email inbox and sms/mms icons showing on my device...ive hidden the messages icon as that acts like a catch all folder ie for emails/sms/mms messages. You can hide it by scrolling to the icon and pressing the BB button and selecting hide...you cannot delete it but can hide it. Also different themes will give you different options...i have one that was made for me by someone on crackberry...i suggest you head over there and start reading as its full of info and advicce regarding apps and other BB related stuff?

Mine looks like this:

Obviously ive rubbed out the 2 calendar entries but as you can see i still have the message icon at the top which catches all the messages i get on my device then i have my email and sms/mms inboxes there as well.

Like i said go over to crackberry.com and you can find hundreds of free themes or paid ones.

Cheers Spawn. The messages order sorted themselves out eventually, I think it got mixed up because one of my outgoing ones hadn't sent properly until i'd received an incoming one.

The programs I thought I had open were the ones which remain open all the time, i'm just used to my old HTC Touch where everything had a habbit of staying open and draining the battery!

One last question, i've added a video to the phone today (MPG4, H.264, AAC) which it should support out the box - the audio plays fine yet it says the video cannot be supported? Are there any third party apps you'd recommend?

Thanks!

Hey Spawn. Looking at your screenshot, I see you have the WiFi connected. Do you just leave it on all the time? How does it affect the battery life? I have the 9700 as well.

Yep have it on all the time...it only connects when i get close to my house or enter my house otherwise its not connected.

Doesnt affect the battery too badly...even on my 9000 Bold i had it set up the same and it didnt kill the battery off.
