Guys do you think ATI have an Ace up there sleeve ready for the fermi launch?
We still havent seen the 5890 and GDDR5 is now able to achieve 7Ghz.

Views and opinions please.

AMD probably already know how good/bad Fermi is and probably can't believe there luck with all the delays Nvidia has been hit with, for the last 6 months AMD have had the mid and high range video card market pretty much all to themselves.

We do know ATI have thought about a HD5890 as it's been listed in the driver notes since last year but they might have already decided that Fermi doesn't post any threat to them and may not need it.

They'll probably release at least a 5890 and maybe a 5950, they'll probably release those to counter the GTX 400 series as and when they know exactly how fast they need to be in order to just about edge out any cards faster than the 5870.

5950 = 5850 x2

And i agree Raven i dont think nvidia will compete enough to will back any movers to ATI since they have had there DX11 5 series out.

But i do think it would be a big 2 fingers up at nvidia if they now released 5890's which if we say they was 20% faster than a 5870 would be a worthwhile release.

Something interesting is the first batch of fermi is refrence after then the vendors will be making them but with such low yields i cant see there being many capable of doing much more than stock.

Roll on next week :)

I'm pretty sure ATI will do a refresh soon.

i dont think they need it , but there is going to be custom 5870/5850 with custom coolers and high clocks im sure 1ghz/1250 mem will challenge fermis , so i see no point releasing 5890

The 5970 is a 5950 really, a 5970 will become a 5950 in reality and the new overclocked versions(or stock clocked 5870 stylie ones) with more memory are basically the real 5970.

Likewise a 5890, or overclocked 5870's, are nothing you couldn't achieve since launch with a 5870(and pretty much a 5850) anyway.

A name doesn't change performance, and a 5890 that can do 1ghz/1.3ghz, or a 5870 that can do 1ghz/1.3ghz mem, will perform the same, though a knock on effect of prices is the only interesting part.

As for playing Metro 2033 in full, its a very short game and one offs with zero replay value really don't require 90fps solid to enjoy. LIkewise turn of DOF and tesselation and a stock 5850 can give you well over 40fps average in a game that isn't a uber fast paced fps and feels smooth at 30fps.

Would you keep on tesselation and DOF if the effects were renamed to "does nothing " and "jokes on you" ?

No, would you turn them on if they actively decreased IQ while lowering performance? No, then why must you have them on when they offer no IQ increase and half performance, just so you can say you maxed it out? I maxed the game out, while turning those two options off, and its more than playable on a £200 card I got on launch the best part of 6 months ago.

If you google "5850 x2" there are quite a few links to articles and even pics! Ati were ready with their refresh a loooooong time ago. Read also that they wanted to get away from the 'x2' naming convention hence '5970'. The 5850 x2 will more than likely be called '5950'. This card alone is more than enough to counter 480. What's going to be interesting is whether or not ati will lower their prices. I guess they're probably going to adopt a 'wait and see' approach. If fermi starts to dent sales then it's going to be nVidia's worst nightmare as they won't be in any financial position to compete on price/value when ati decides to lower prices.

Rocky times ahead for the green camp.
