Current gen consoles peaked? and are you ready for the next gen?

Graphics is not what I was talking about.

ok so you werent talking about graphics but media hype.... it all came with forza, its really building with reach - which i thing will be bigger then halo3.

the problem is that sony are always going to be one foot behind no matter how many good releases they get, the userbase for 360 is massive now and its built up a good hype for it. its like the saturn and ps1 - the saturn really shone in its later days but by then it was too late as no-one was interested.

Both the 360 and PS3 still have lots of life left yet. As they are unified hardware i,m sure developers will continue to push both systems that bit further. I,m sure there is more in both machines graphicly its just the huge development costs of pushing things further. The visuals on Metro 2033 really are quite impressive, and dont forget the Cry Engine 2 or whatever it is called is coming to the consoles too, so i,m sure that will bring new tricks..

MS really need some killer games that arent sci fi crackdown , ME2 , halo series , GoW. too much aliens and space and sci fi magic for me. looking forward to alan wake though

I used to wish they would release new consoles... but that changed recently.

Up until 2 or so years ago I was a PC gamer only, then tried my first console - a 360. Loved it. Then landed up getting a PS3. Hell, I even landed up downgrading my PC to no longer being gaming capable.

But then I started wishing they would release something able to run 1080p, etc, and render more graphically.

Then just recently, decided wanted to play some STO online, so upgraded to a 4870 for jsut basics. Then installed some of my other games like Crysis, and even went and bought BC2 on PC.

Then thought it would be nice to be able to turn the settings up more. So I bought a 5850. I now have games running at higher settings, looking beautiful. But you know what, I am regretting not having purcahsed it on console, degraded graphics or not.

I am not having any more fun with the game the games looking any better, I am just having less fun not playing on console.

Sure, you may think this is a pc vs console post, but what I am saying is that upgrading the consoles just now isn't going to make games more fun. They will just be a bit prettier.

Thinking of selling my 5850, sticking with 4870 until I am bored with Star Trek Online (soon) and then gaming away on my antique 360 and PS3 :D

"The userbase for 360 is massive now" Okay great, Yes it is. But are you by comparison saying the PS3 user base is small?? I'd take a look at some sites and demographics, Check out Japan and find out what consoles are topping the sales over there. Then add the European and American sales into the mix.

I hope you're not basing "the userbase for 360 is massive now" on all your friends owning one, and not many having a PS3, Because thats not really a worldwide statistic.

I'm gonna source the stats I saw not long ago *edit* Stats added - Source date (Feb 5th 2010 )

PS3's life-to-date sales total: 33.71 million units. That's just about half of the Wii's most recent total of 67.45 million, and about 86% of the Xbox 360's recently-announced 39 million

There we go, The PS3's userbase is also "massive" and both are trounced by the Wii.

Also consider these 2 points.

1. How many 360's out of the total sales are replacements for the 33% failure rate or blacklisted Modified consoles
2. The PS3 is 1 year behind the release of the Xbox 360

before the killer games, what about a 360 that doesnt die? i may write to ms see what they say.

Before they bring out the next gen of consoles they need to make sure their platforms are stable, I've had the ps3 and 360 crash on me a number of times, Never used to happen with the ps1, ps2

They are well ventilated also.

In terms of graphical ability I think that I'm ready for a new generation of console. Something like Mass Effect 2 without the anti aliasing issues and a cleaner, more textured look would be the dogs danglies!

I remember quite vividly the disc laser read issues with both the PS1 and PS2; stuff like turning them upside down to get them to work and all that jazz. The old days were just as bad for hardware failures, but they weren't as well documented as today's shortgivings.

Well, I think attach rates say more than enough about the first point:

You'd expect if the majority of the sales were made up by people buying multiple 360 consoles they'd be buying less software per system, but that's simply not the case.

As they get more complicated and more capable, it's inevitable they'll become more prone to crashing and bugs.

Same thing applies with phones these days, the old 3310s etc never crashed, whereas the more complicated phones/smartphones we have these days are far more susceptible to crashes, lock-ups etc.

I'm not talking about laser issues. They were well known imo, I mean just random lock ups,

As said it is because they are more complicated but god it's annoying! They need to take a step back with these things and iron out the bugs. (The same goes for phones!!)

I'm not bored of the current gen, I'm bored of the repetitive games that the are getting churned out. Bar one or two games for each console there's zero originality anymore.
