Hi guys, planning on building a gaming machine with these components. I've done some research, but just thought I'd post here to see if there are likely to have any problems with these components:

AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition
Asus M4A77TD Pro AMD 770

Geil value 2x2gb 1333mhz ram (listed in te motherboards QVL)

as for gfx, I'm stuck between a 5870 and a 5850.

My only concern is overclocking limitations with the 770 chipset. How far am I likely to be able to take the 965?

All replies appreciated :)

Well if you can afford the 5870 the by all means go for it.

Im not really good with AMD chips but from what ive seen you would want a 790 chip set and if you wanna overclock you well need a aftermarket heatskin.

Why not go with the 955

1600 RAM

5850

Asus M4A79XTD Evo

And then crossfire the 5850 later and overclock the 955 to a little over the 965 levels.

Yea, I was looking at the asus crosshair iii formula which I believe has a 790 chipset, but just trying to save the pennies ya' know :P

can the chipset on the board in the opening post not overclock at all then?

I would get a Arctic cooling freezer 64 or whatever they call it. I have the freezer pro 7 on my current intel machine which looks identical and that works great for me.

Sounds good, what chipset does the 79xtd evo have do you know? And what kind of price would it total to ~? Using iPhone on cell network, browsing around is painfuly slow lol.

The chipset is the 790X one. I bought the 955/M4A79XTD/4gb RAM combo a couple of weeks ago, set me back about £300. I managed to get the RAM and CPU on a This Week Only though!

Nice! I take it the this week only has expired now. What RAM did you get?

the 79XTD cost £88.99 which is a 790 chipset and i was thinking that would be best aswell but wasnt 100% sure. Its £10 more than the one you spec'd, but going from a 965 to a 955 saves you about £10. Then just get 5850 and some 1600mhz Ram as suggested above.

Yeah, I bought the stuff a couple of weeks ago so unfortunately has expired. I got the G-Skill Ripjaw stuff, was a cracking price. Very nippy machine, I was encoding music from FLAC to mp3 at 80x across the four cores earlier on! :D

Awesome! Very helpfully indeed! One thing with the crossfire though, If I went and bought a 5850 by powercolor today, and in say a year I want another 5850 for xfire, would I have to get another powercolor card? Or could it be a saphire or a xfx if I coulnt get hold of a powercolor?

Well im not 100% sure but i think any company is fine just have to make sure they both run at the same clock speed and its should work together well. Good luck aswell :)
