What is making Sonic popular at the moment?

As I'm aged 31 now, I grew up in the 1990s and I remember the original console war of Sonic vs Mario. I was definitely more of a Sonic kid. The Dreamcast was the final nail in the coffin for Sega, and down they went, along with Sonic, while Mario continued to thrive in the 2000s.

Nowadays, you only have to browse a few artist profiles on deviantART, and you can clearly see that Sonic is still far from dead. Is this purely for nostalgia or are games still floating about? I recently bought a PC CD-ROM disc with all the good old Sonic games to play on my PC but I haven't known of any contemporary console games as such?

Oh, and plus, Alton Towers' "Spinball Whizzer" roller coaster has been re-themed to Sonic for the 2010 season. So again, my mystery remains.

Maybe it's the imminent arrival of Sonic 4. ;)

If not, it must be nostalgia, because all of the hideous Sonic games that have been released since Sonic Adventure should be conjuring up anything but interest and happiness. :p

there is a new 2d sonic game due for release this year, cant remember the name but its due at some point.

there is also a fan re-programming the original sonic into HD on pc, cant remeber the name but the beta/alpha was due out this month.

alton towers also now have a sonic themed room in the hotel but last i read is its about £300 a night (possibly weekend not too sure)

**edit: look into 'project needlemouse' its the new sonic game production title**

Ahh thanks guys. I'm glad that people still like Sonic due to the original early-90s stuff. I was curious about the Alton Towers ride too, because people aged 12 now weren't even born when Sega Sonic came out. Even the Dreamcast was cutting it fine with their birth dates!

Never got the appeal of sonic tbh. I had both the Master system and the Megadrive and adored both but sonic was one of my least fav 2d platformers on the console. Yeah it was fast but other than that I'd rather play Pitfall, Earthworm jim, Flashback or the best 2d platformer on a sega system Psycho Fox.

2D platform games > 3D platform games.

There should be more of them, even in this generation.

Sega's last chance with this tbh!

Now that its finally adopting the "4" title, Sega seem prepared to put everything on the line for this one! :D Should be interesting.

I couldn't agree more. ;)

This is definitely a momentous time if Sega have decided to wheel out Sonic 4. I just hope it's better than the tat that's been falling out of their Sonic labs recently. :D

I'm also 31. I remember when I first saw Sonic 1 running on a Megadrive in an underground (literally) gameshop on a Japanese Megadrive. (Fiction Factory under the bus station in Hanley if any older OcUK locals remember that) I was blown away by the speed of it. I must have been 12 because I somehow managed to persuade my parents to buy me a Jap Megadrive + Mickey's Castle of Illusion + sonic for about £200 iirc. for my birthday and I would have been 13 after checking the release dates.

The only other Sonic game that has impressed me was Sonic Adventure (1) on the Dreamcast.

Funny to read about a game from that gen. I've tonight bought and finished Turtles in Time on PSN. There's not been many games that have REALLY impressed me over the years. Probably count them on 1 hand. Turtles that arcade in 1989 was another.

From what I gathered from the past few years, whilst the Mario games are generally better games, get better reviews and still sell by the bucketloads which isn't so surprising, Sonic as the character is actually more popular especially with children here in the UK.

I generally see more Sonic toys & dolls with kids than I would see Mario ones. There was also the Sonic anime series years back, which is probably still re-running somewhere, and not to mention every now and then, you might see McDonalds doing some promotion with the Happy Meals as well.

There are a few decent Sonic games though, the DS Sonic Rush series and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing is actually pretty damn fun. But yeah, the last truely great Sonic games was the Adventure games on the Dreamcast. Sonic Heroes was okay if not for some really annoying glitches.
