Interesting bikes from the 90s (that are cheap to run and fun)

Got a 98' VFR800 myself, great bikes, bullet proof bar the regulator rectifier; which I replaced with a Suzuki part.

The V4 does sound great, along with the whine from the gear driven cams. And 110bhp is plenty fun enough for me.

Srad 750 FI version.
Got one myself and in 18 mths of ownership, it's cost me a new rear tyre, MOT and new clutch lever, LHS footrest (due to it falling over when the concrete the sidestand was resting on decided to give way:rolleyes:) as must spend parts.
All the other stuff I have bought for it, has just been because I wanted to, not because I had to.:D

I had a 96 ZX6R as my first bike, awesome machine but I buy one now, would I hell as like. the things were quick as hell but made of cheese. Frame/headstock would bend if you so much as dropped it let alone a half serious off.

98 R1 is a fantasic suggestion though. Madman of a machine when it came out and still very lively, also looks very smart in red and white still.

Out of the others, thundercat has a great engine but looks dated and is very lardy for a 600. great midrange and brakes though (for its age)

I'm really tempted by the SV650 right now and start racing the thing... but then v4's sound heavenly and Thundercats are dirt cheap and Fireblades are, well, rather fast... :)

I dont want a sprint despite amazing reviews since if I was going for a 90's sport tourer I would choose the VFR for the sound.

Dont want a Speed Triple due to handling.

I have an RF600R which has been a fabulous bike over the past 3 years :) Probably isn't a contender here though!

What is your budget?

I have been looking at VFR750s for this summer after hearing my mates v4 pan!

Due to handling?

My 2 handle just fine and much better than any of the SV's or VFR's my friends have. Better noise as well.

If you want speed, go for the R1. If you want a nice sound and touring comfort, VFR (best sounding bike I've had). But then, sound is subjective. If you want a mix of speed and comfort, get a 98 blade. Comfortable riding position, quick (not as quick as today's litre sportsbike crop, but far faster than a Thundercat or SV650) and good reliability.

I presume he means the 900's (like mine). They dont handle very well at all in all honesty as they are heavy, and top heavy at that, but they look cool as **** ;)

The 955's improved the handling massively though, so they are still worth a look, even if they do look a bit girly in comparison ;)
