Porsche Panamera

Reading this thread, I can't help but keep thinking some sort of Bentley saloon. It will be in the price bracket but out of warranty, and I guess that's a no-no. It ticks all the boxes otherwise.

I believe the R63 is no more though - since nobody bought one. The quickest one is the R500.

Brabus probably do a mentally quick one, but it is bound to be absolutely silly money.

Chairman has/had an R63 and a 320CDI version - they break quite a bit. Didn't really seem to suite a purpose. A posh Ford Galaxy/S-Max if you will. He now has a ML 320 CDI. :(

Stick with the Q7, it really does sound like it suits your needs best and outclasses the competition, or of course you could buy the smaller version and get the Q5 3.0TDi with all the toys - i cant wait until mine arrives :D

How about the BMW X6? Looks like a mean car on the road...don't think performance will be there though.

Nope. Q7 destroys it on all levels.

wholeheartedly disagree, but as has been said no point trying to convince you. In fact i'd struggle to find 3 things it beats it out on  (and its a bit misleading comparing the inferior RR Sport to the full on RR.

You mention the RR being too slow, which i find strange when they do the RR Autobiography with the same engine in it as the supercharged RR SPort.

But the Supercharged engine is ridiculous, even if you have the money to fuel it doing 13mpg is just pointless and annoying.

In the competing vehicles the diesel versions offer good performance, in the RR the equivilent diesel engine.. doesn't.

What's wrong with the TDV8? I imagine it offers decent enough performance. Sure it might not offer the performance of the equivalent BMW or Audi but then does it need to? IMO a car of this type needs enough grunt to never feel lacking in power and that's it. Although I agree the previous 6-cyl versions were probably too slow.

Given I'd be most interested to read your Panamera review I suggest you purchase a Panamera.

In dark colours they look imposing, saw a dark blue one on the Porsche stand at an event at the Nurburgring and although HUGE it is definitely impressive.

The fact it takes a V8 to offer performance thats still absolutely miles off the 6 cylinder diesels in the Q7 and the X5 tells you everything you need to know about the performance.

Range Rover 3.6 TDV8: 0-60 8.6 seconds, 124mph. This is the performance of a middle of the road diesel hatchback these days - a 118d, for example, is about this quick.

By contrast, the BMW X5 XDrive35d offers 0-60 in 6.8 seconds and 146mph - considerably faster - and the 09 Q7 3.0 TDI will do 0-60 in 8.2 seconds and 136mph.

If we compare like with like, the V8 Diesel Q7 rockets to 60 in 6.2 seconds and does 146mph.

Whichever way you look at it, the Range Rover is not a quick car. Its rivals are much faster.

Many people do not care about this but Spie obviously does.

Will probably get slated for this, but as the A8/S8 was mentioned, how about an Alpina B7 Bi-turbo: http://www.alpina-automobiles.com/?3041&L=0

Seems they also do it in 4wd, on the continent at least. You could go and pick it up from the factory if you wanted.

500 Bhp and 0-62 in 4.7s (not sure if this is the 4wd version or not).

Just a thought and different from the other cars mentioned.

If fuel economy as abysmal as the Range Rover is out of the question, the S8 won't really cut it either. The Bentley makes everything else seem lacking slightly but wasn't really a contender anyway so that would have to go as well.

So something remotely like a Panamera, with AWD, plush and comfy, can take skis, faster than the current Q7 but with range and semi decent economy around the same price, but not a Q7 and that won't depreciate like a rock and looks unusual with more room than a RR Sport?

Nothing I can think off. I'd have to compromise to fit as many of the stipulations above and buy a Panamera or a 2010 A8 4.2 TDI.

The R Class is a massive failure, not many sold and as confirmed by the Mercedes Assistance guy that came round the other week (dead battery in the AMG after not being used for 3 months!), the R Class' biggest market is currently the Mercedes Assistance drivers:p Think they are teaming up with Nestle to give them away in selected cereals.

Spie, I just say you get a Phantom with a roof rack and be done with it:p

Problem with the Porsche is it looks hideous.

I would rather have a second hand Flying Spur. But then I think we can all tell, you rather like the Q7, so why not another?:)

I say just get the RS6 Avant and keep it for at least 10 years so depreciation is less of an issue. Why would you ever need any more car? It's the ultimate wolf in wool. How old is the Q7? I wouldn't have thought they have been around long enough to need replacing yet?

Panamera for me was a joke until I got to see one pushing some serious numbers on the motorway. That, for me, was the time it became a real viable future purchase

Impressive performance.

However, I've always had a certain view about X5 owners. Wrong, I know. I'm sure many of them are really great people.

I hadn't realised Alpina made a 4wd B7.
You know you want Spie, the new 7 is lush.

The Panamera is for geriatrics, certainly the ones I've seen have had an old person at the wheel :p
