Hi there, you wouldnt be any change know the answer to this question would you?

If you volunteer to work for someone for a couple of weeks for free, at the end of the two weeks would they turn around and say "you've worked well, do you fancy working here full time?" and then recruit you?

Because I was thinking of doing it, just wondered if anyone knew the answer to this question?

Thanks in advance.

They aren't going to employ you unless they need you and you are worth investing in. A new employee costs time and money as well as other resources. They'll only take you on if they think it's going to be a good investment and you'll make them their money back through your work.

Completely depends on the situation. If the company is recruiting, it's possible. I'd suggest that a smaller company is far more likely to do this than a larger company, as they'd not have the procedures to run through. What type of work is it?

If the company isn't recruiting there's no chance of a job at the end. If it is, then it's still only a maybe.

I know the design industry is riddled with this ethic and a lot of design consultancies rely on interns to do the donkey work because they don't have to pay them.

I've done a range of volunteer work, and that thought would never have crossed my mind. It's unpaid and voluntary, why on earth would you expect a job offer at the end of it unless the organisation you were working for implied that to be the case ? And even if there were a possible job (of any real worth) I suspect they'd want more than two weeks to assess you.

Ok well thanks for your replies, I still think I'll go ahead and do it anyways because it will look good on my CV. I'm not sure what kind of volunteer work I'll be doing, but I just want to do something physical and outdoors and I found a website explaining it all and I'm going to the Leeds volunteer center tomorrow, it says I can walk in without an appointment and speak to someone and they will sort me out so am just going to go and see what happens.

EDIT: Oh just to reply to "philip2009", I'm currently unemployeed and have been for a few months and friends and family said if I did vonunteer work maybe I would get a job at the end of it, for example if I worked with animals for a few weeks or something like that, because I'm interested in that sort of thing and just wondered if this would help me get a job. Because I've worked in an office enviroment sat on my behind everyday, and I dont want to do that sort of job anymore, I want to do the complete oppisite infact since I am a gym freak and love to be more physical.

Thanks for your advice.

Personally, I think that's the right attitude to have Scotchegg. Much better than sitting in wasting time :)

Edit: have a thumbs up

If more people had your attitude maybe there wouldnt be so many dossers about.
I hope you do find employment through this, it sounds like you have a good attitude.
Good luck and keep us informed how it goes.
