my daughters laptop fried last night, smoke and everything. everything is dead. HDD is actualy okay, plugged it into my pc it seems to be alrite.

she needs a replacement. CHEAP. have a spair monitor. whats the cheapest i can get for her, shes 9 and plays them dress up cartoon people and pets games. dosnt take much of anything to do. whats the cheapest option for her. i have a stick of DDR 1gb ram and an IDE optical drive so i can reinstall xp onto it.

what are my options? just need a cheap MB and cpu really. DDR pref. inside a cheap case. and a small psu. have the ram and HDD.

the laptop was about 7 years old. was expecting it to give up years ago as it wasnt exacaly top of the line one.

im guessing as she gets older she will be into this msn and facebook stuff. what could i get for her.

1) are you absolutly sure you never tripped and fell down the stairs with it? if you had you might be able to claim on the insurance...

2)also are you sure it did not burn you? quite badley, if it had the manafacturer may be willing to give you a new one for free? exploding laptops make for bad publicity..

Did you check on the internet that its not a common defect and has an extended warranty?

I noticed some HP models are prone to burn and they were replacing them even if OOW...

it was a hp pavlon 6400 coverd with hannah montanae stickers. and im just looking for the cheapest alternative. dosnt really matter if its a desktop or notebook. just something to keep her happy :)

if your looking cheap, pre built is almost always better. The savings arent worth the time that you spend building it to be honest (I am talking incredibly cheap though).

OCUK have this
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-239-OK&groupid=43&catid=1078&subcat=

Or you could give them a call?

If your looking second hand then get an amd 64 s939 3500
and a mobo to go with it, cheapo case from ocuk and the corsair 400w psu with some agp graphics card.

the x2's are better, but are wel overpriced :(

I still think you should contact the manufacturer, a laptop setting on fire with your 9 year old daughter using it isn't good...

it being covered in stickers probably = vents covered or at least paper on hot bits or something. At least a lot of dust after 9 years, although i dont know where manufacturers stand on that sort of thing.

Liampope: your not allowed to trade outside of the MM, edit your post and take it to email, he has a trust address so send it there. Your system was awesome back in the days when BF2 had just come out, and I REALLLLLLLLLLLY wish I could find my Audigy 2, it has some how disappeared so my spare is sitting with a soundblaster live 5.1 :(

I'd look at getting a low end AMD system, something like below should be perfect

Athlon X2 240 - 46.99

Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2H AMD 740G (Socket AM3/AM2+) DDR2 microATX Motherboard - 45.99

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency Dual Channel (GX22GB6400UDC) GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency Dual Channel (GX22GB6400UDC) - 30.64

Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM 31.98

Coolermaster Elite 360 Mini Tower Case - Black - 24.99

OCZ StealthXStream 400w Silent Power Supply OCZ StealthXStream 400w Silent Power Supply - 32.99

Totals 225.34 with delivery

Was the laptop on a desk, or on her lap... Most laptops actually depend on being on a desk and transfering heat through the bottom of the computer. That said, the laptop should throttle/shutdown before actually letting out its smoke :P.

Insurance fraud is just dishonest in this case, and its also going to be fairly easy to see that the laptop burned out rather than damage from a fall. Even if you toss the lappy down the stairs, it will still have burned out components inside. But contacting the laptop manufacter is certainly worth a try :).

The AMD primo setup on OCUK is like, £280 with no os, and its quite a bit better, and you dont have to build it, although the psu is a cheapo, but then again, there are no add in cards so it wont matter tbh. I am right in assuming the 7850 BE is better than the 240, or am i totally wrong here?

Optical Drive 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter

Just noticed your profile, SupermotoMX. Pretty good going to have a 9 year old daughter at 18! :) Either you must have seriously, er, overclocked your puberty, or something fishy's going on. I say the laptop's yours, as are the Hannah Montana stickers and the desire to play dress up the cartoon games. Come on - admit it :) You're hoping to upgrade to something powerful enough to run farmville.

:)

Avoid netbooks they are dinky but even your daughter will notice how looooooooonnnnnngggggg they take to load up even the most basic software. it will avoid the remark from her "my puter is dead" even though it's just loading!!!! lol

Cheap cheap replacement is down the high street, place that I can't directly name on here, but they give ya cash for goods that you can redeem later or they sell your goods. If you get my drift. Times are hard and our local shop has loads of Vista and XP lappies and dreadful netbooks in at the mo at cheapo prices.

Otherwise the MM on here comes up with some good replacement laptops that may be suitable from time to time :)

Yer... explain that away ? lol :)

Must be a young starter :)

For a nine year-old, you're probably better off buying an old Dell Dimension, or something similar, and add the DDR RAM to it. Otherwise, I'm sure you can get some cheap components from MM.

Ah reet - edited :(

It was all pretty awesome for sure, but I kinda stopped PC gaming @ HL2 when I got a girlfriend==>wife==>house to renovate :). Picked up a PS3 and Wii in the meantime, but it's about time to upgrade the PC now!

The 7850 is slightly faster and offers an unlocked multiplyer however the 240 is a lower TDP processor which I would see as more beneficial for its intended purpose
