Germany warns against use of Firefox browser

...according to BBC news. Ironic really given the stick IE got for the same thing earlier this year from FireFox advocates. ;) Those crazy Germans! :D

The German government has warned its citizenry against the use of the Firefox browser due to security issues.

The warning from the Federal Office for Information Security is an echo of a similar pronouncement it made against Internet Explorer in January.

The office warned that the Firefox vulnerability, confirmed by Firefox makers, could allow hackers to run malicious programs on users' computers.

[snip...]

The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has recommended that users stop using Firefox until the tested fix is released - in a move remarkably similar to the January announcement, in which France followed suit just days later. [Clicky for the rest]

Every browser has security holes regardless of whether or not they have been made public. It would seem Germany, and their good friends France, would rather their people not use the Internet at all.

They have gone a bit "odd" about it haven't they... At this rate they'll be wanting people to switch browser weekly, depending on which has an unpatched weakness at any given time.

Although to be fair the final version of the fix via auto update is not due until the 30th. Mozilla were advised of the vulnerability on 18 Feb and publicly acknowledged it on the 22nd so the fix has taken over a month. Not a problem in itself except for the haranguing FF advocates gave IE over a similar thing. ;)

They should be teaching people to use the Internet in a safe manner - i.e. avoid dodgy websites, don't click OK on every shiny popup and certainly don't download/install anything before knowing exactly where it is from and so on. Do all that and a few holes in a browser [that tend to be fixed quickly] will be a minor issue.

Yeah, but this IS Germany. :D

So they don't want Germanists to use IE or Firefox. So Opera or Chrome then?:D

This is basically going to carry on and on until we're all sat here browsing via the command line isn't it?

It's the future! :D
