480GTX Vs HD 5870

lol, were you seeing if he'd correct you? Irony, or did you actually forget to do the ironing? :p

It's like saying "borked" basically, I hope he isn't trying to make out like he came up with "oh the ironing" though.

(it's not actually ironic anyway, but yeah)

LOL@ all the desperate fanboys trying to downplay the impending defeat of their 5 series card in all benchmarks.

RavenXXX2 in particular.

OK, lets just get this straight, I don't think you'll find a single post on these forums from anyone, AMD or Nvidia who think the 480gtx will be slower than the 5870.

There are plenty of people, both AMD and Nvidia who think it will be worse value and performance per pound.

IE if its 5% faster and costs 33% more, why would anyone care its available, buy 2 cheaper AMD cards for the same cost and higher performance.

Nvidia need to BEAT AMD on performance at the same price. All but about well, 14 people in the world think Nvidia will beat AMD but simply won't be competitive in terms of cost, beyond that, the likelyhood that Nvidia will have almost zero availability after a couple of weeks makes it even worse.

Nvidia winning on performance quite literally means nothing.

If Only Nvidia were in the market, no other card makers at all 1000 people would buy whatever their card is at £200, than whatever they are selling at £300, thats just how life works. LEss people buy more expensive things.

If Nvidia don't sell a £200 version, AMD wins by default until they can. Even worse again is that even at £300 for their lower end card, Nvidia will be taking a MASSIVE loss on each core sold. Fine for us as end users if you can find one, but terrible for the long term viability of Nvidia.

Performance, which has never really been questioned(beyond HOW much faster it will be), does matter, to a degree, to end users. Price is by far the most important factor, Nvidia simply will not win there. PRofits, Nvidia WILL fail here, you need to realise most of the people aren't simply thinking about end user experience, but everything all factored in together before commenting on if its a success or not.

Plus if the 480 only beats the 5870 by a small amount AMD can just released an overclocked 5870 and retake the performance crown since cypress has a lot of overclock headroom.

I have a 5xxx series and i am not jealous at all i know it should be faster then what i have but at the end of the day fermi being released will not suddnly make my card not play all my games maxed out. As Drunken said the intersting part of fermi is where it is going to fit into the current situation because if it is only a little faster but quite a bit more exspensive surely it's a loss.

Drunkenmaster has a good point, though I am sure even if Fermi is only 1% faster at 80% more cost, the likes of Rroff, Duran et al will buy them up... :P

What's all this fanboy argumentation?

Shouldn't the ATI fans also be hoping that the 480 outperforms the 5870 at near-price-parity? It's competition between ATI and nVidia that drives innovation and price reductions in this sector, after all.

I generally tend to prefer ATI overall because my favourite two cards have been ATI (and I still haven't got over the 5800XT :p), but it's clear to me that having each company's release beat the previous release of the other at a competitive price is better for the consumer.

If the 480 were to be only 1% faster and 80% more expensive what good would that do? It does none of use any favours if one or the other company can't compete at any specific price-point.

Haha, I don't need one I am sure, if I really wanted one I would buy one, but I hardly play games to warrant it, and I'd rather it went towards something useful..like Dura Ace Di2 ;)

then gtfo of this forum.

Haha, good response. I do have an interest in components.

Anyway I am sure you will enjoy your traditional rubbing of new NV hardware on your groin whilst surrounded by 12 screens of the NV CEO giving speeches and your fellow brethren joining you in mutual pleasure :D

Whos cares if Nvidia's card is more powerful, the 5*** got released 6 months ago!

I hope they are as powerful as they say or its just complete fail...
