Im sure this topic has been brought up plenty of times before. Couldnt find anything though.

Basically I have an ASUS P5QC mobo, and when i was installing windows 7 and even vista (64bit) they wouldnt allow more than 1 stick of RAM (2GB DDR2).

Well ive got windows installed on my PC now, have for over 2 months, but i really want to put that extra 2GB RAM on my mobo.

Any ideas why my PC wont boot with more than 1 stick of RAM?
Is there any more info you guys need?

Cheers
Ross

No it wont, whenever i turn the PC off, put in the extra RAM it just will not boot to windows.

Yeh installing windows with more than @2GB RAM is a well known error. But ive got windows installed and running perfrectly, i just cant seem to add this extra 2GB RAM to my mobo.

Yes mate I have.

Ive been told this is a common problem. My mate has the same mobo and he couldnt install more than 1 slot of RAM.

Ive downloaded the update from ASUS for my mobo, but i dunno how to install it. It's a .rom file i think

Ok so i recently spent a while trying to fix this issue with the day I had off work.

So i updated the bios using flash utility in the bios. But I still cannot load windows still when i put in the extra slot of RAM.

Its in the same channel, and its the same RAM that is already in 2GB DDR2.

So windows will load for a while as if its going to go to login screen, then i just get the blue screen fatal error!!! and the computer restarts.

Any ideas?

Have you set the timings manually in the BIOS? most importantly, the VDIMM? Try setting all of these with one stick, save, shutdown, put both sticks in.

I changed the voltage of the DRAM i think it was as i read the auto settings are 1.5v and 1.8v, but my RAM is 2.0v

I think i need to fiddle around abit more with the Voltage maybe.
Where do you change the timings? And whats VDIMM?

That's probably the problem then, you need to get the voltage to 2.0v. Is there a +/- setting? DDR2 standard voltage (VDIMM) is 1.8v so there might be a setting to offset this to +0.2v

Ive tried changing the voltage to 2.0. Its normally set to [AUTO]

What speed is your ram running at, whats it rated at (use cpu-z). 2V, or even 2.1V is often needed for multiple sticks of DDR2 running at high clock speeds, or tight timings.

800Mhz
timing is 4-4-4-12, iirc, im not too sure on that one.

Will download cpu-z when i get a chance and report back any data

That's SPD. SPD is nothing more than text built into the RAM of recomemded speeds/timings combinations for you to look at. It's not what the RAM is running at. Look at the memory tab next to it.

The 2nd column is the fail-safe 1.8v settings for motherboards that don't have many RAM options so it can still run at 400mhz. The 3rd column is the settings you should aim for (forgetting overclocking for a minute) with the tighter timings and 2.0v VDIMM

Thats the memory tab.

So I changed the voltage on my mobo from 2.0 to 2.1. But still having fatal error (blue screen) when trying to load windows.

So im back to 1 slot of RAM.
Why wont my mobo take 2 slots of RAM?

set the timings and SPD manually in the BIOS as well, the numbers are on the first screenshot, unser EPP#1, match the names in screenshot two to find out what they are called in your bios. Look under the voltage monitor (in the power mnagement tab) in your bios to see what voltage your RAM is actually getting, it could be +/- what you are setting it to. Either +/- can be bad, so adjust it until it sits around 2.0. Make sure the command rate is set to 2t as well.

Your NB might be undervolting on auto, although shouldnt be for only 2 sticks, but set it at something like 1.4v just in case.

Have you run memtest on both sticks on their own? how about on both sticks together?
