I'm stopping working for at least 2 months (probably 4 months). Thinking about the wonderful ways I can spend my MASSES of time off. Which of the below should I do? I will accept 'percentage answers' so feel free to say 50% (1), 50% (8) or something!

Here's my choices of stuff I'm seriously considering ..

1) Attempt to write a (fiction) book. Never done before. Chance of giving up half way through = 98%. Chance of it ending up anything but awful <2%

2) Watch loads of TV, all series of Prison break, house, dexter, a load of other stuff I've never seen but told is great.

3) Attempt to write a indie computer game. Never done before (but have done lots of programming). Chance of giving up half way through = 98%. Chance of it ending up anything but awful <2%

4) DIY around the house and getting the garden into shape. Its not bad at the moment, but could getting looking awesome like a show home??

5) Get my DAS license for a big 'proper' motorbike (costs £580 and then £4000 to buy the bike I want - money I don't really have so putting myself into debt without a job?)

6) Beers, curry, world cup prep, world cup viewing and analysing with, er, more beers!! Full time!!

7) Get ultra fit by doing exercise every day and eating like a hippy

8) Try and set up some internet business selling something (dunno what). Chance of giving up half way through = 98%. Chance of it ending up anything but awful <2%.

9) Play all the PC games I have failed to complete that really were very good. For example I only put 2 hours into 'mass effect' and then stopped for some reason don't know why -- go back to it?

10) Go and do that 180 mile walk right across Britain (I forget what its called but its basically right across the lakes etc)

11) Self teach professional qualifications (eg PRINCE II) and take exams (needs wodja :( )

So - what would YOU do out of the above if you've got time coming out of your ears ..??

Buy a plane ticket. Fly to Australia. Return in 4 months time.

I'd do this. It's very rare to be able to have that much time free. I'd hate to spend the time at home when there's a whole world out there to see

why the time off?

I would probably do a bit of a few of them (minus the game developing and book writing) as I would probably not do one thing well for that long.

:D I know exactly what I'm doing because I'm doing this - my last day at work is on Thursday

Helps that I'll be in California of course, so plan to spend 5-6 weeks surfing and exploring the Southern California area, then spending another 6 weeks doing a road trip around the Southern States. :)

Just gave up work, I think technically its called 'a sabbatical'.

100% economically fine, I could be off for years.

Sick of taking rubbish at work, once or twice in your life you've got to 'jump' without looking over the edge first ..

what were you doing before? on good pay with some income (without the dole?)

You've missed the most important one I reckon and that is to go travelling. With months off at a time this is the best and cheapest way to e.g. go around the world.

1 and 3 aren't bad ideas provided you're good at either, only you know that. 8's a terrible idea, people devote much more time and still fail. Unless you really find a niche and can immediately start on it, I'd personally not bother.

2) Watch loads of TV, all series of Prison break, house, dexter, a load of other stuff I've never seen but told is great.

9) Play all the PC games I have failed to complete that really were very good. For example I only put 2 hours into 'mass effect' and then stopped for some reason don't know why -- go back to it?

You can sort of devote a little bit of time doing this while you work no? If you can't fit any more in don't bother. I still have a mountain of stuff to catch up, it's not really that much of a loss if you don't see a particular series (no matter what anybody says! :p).

4's quite a good idea - you'd raise the value of your property and make your own home space nicer. Again, do if you have the funds, which for 5 you were doubting. It's a pretty cool idea I suppose, but apart from pleasure doesn't bring that much else in reward.

6) Beers, curry, world cup prep, world cup viewing and analysing with, er, more beers!! Full time!!

Fair enough but surely not just that. That for me would be a complete waste of time.

7) Get ultra fit by doing exercise every day and eating like a hippy

10) Go and do that 180 mile walk right across Britain (I forget what its called but its basically right across the lakes etc)

11) Self teach professional qualifications (eg PRINCE II) and take exams (needs wodja :( )

Improve yourself, which is always a good idea. 7 and 10 are a good idea you could combine the two of them and possibly raise a bit of money for charity? In this way you may even be able to justify sticking it on your C.V. or something, 11 is especially true for this.

A couple of weeks skiing while the season's still just about going.

A couple of weeks on a tall ship.

Another couple of weeks with the family in Stockholm.

And if the time off stretches to July then a couple of weeks at Herräng dance camp.

That's two months done already...

...if I got four to play with:

I'd do a lot more cycling around town, enjoying the spring daytimes which currently pass me by while I'm at work - meeting up with friends who have more free time during the day (which would normally mean we don't manage to meet up so often as they're busy when I'm not).

Do all the checks on the car then take it around the country visiting all those friends and family members I've not had time to see for far too long.

Finally - sleep, boozing, partying, living nocturnally for a bit, doing what I want without time pressure. Aaaahhhhh.

On amazing money, enough to be able to afford to do this. I doubt I'll qualify for any social security whatsoever (literally not one penny), but not really bothered.

how come you can't afford a motorbike then? all relative i guess.

& neither should you get any social security for your gaming, walking, curry and fap-fest;)
