Current gen consoles peaked? and are you ready for the next gen?

lol, wii peaked the day it came out.
Look at the profits its generated, jog on.
Narrowminded opinion to the max.

Theres only so much immersion graphics can give you, the controller is the way you interact with the game, good on Nintendo for being innovative.
As someone who played stuff solely on a PC the Wii impressed me, the only remarkable features about the other 2 that was next gen was the cell in the PS3 and the blu-ray.
Dont get me wrong, iv got a 360 and its quality, and the ease of use and Live partys etc are brilliant.. but pushing constantly for graphics has seen loads of disappointing pretty games.. my fondest memorys are of the games with superior gameplay, graphics comes after that.
So much easier to get immersed in something with amazing storyline, or playing against/with your mates with a greater sense of control, if i wanted the prettiest graphics id watch a film or step outside.

the biggest compliment one can have it when someone wants to copy you....i think its clear not only from the money generated but also the fact that sony and ms are copying them . that nintendo had the winning formula from the off and to think that when it was announced that everyone was talking potty humour.... i think nintendo are laughing pretty hard now.

graphics dont make a game , gameplay does - anyone thats played VVVVV can tell you that

indeed, nothing wrong with looking at a winning formula and trying to emulate and adapt it..
Its how products evolve, some people dont seem to realise this.
Ideally the next consoles would try and take the winning features from all current systems and combine them, try and evolve them and try to implement their own features which they beleive are next gen.

Bluray player, Wii's control innovation(but also retain pads as they are actually decent control devices for some games that you just couldnt be bothered waving stuff about for)
Cant really think of anything to take over from the 360.. PSN isnt so bad from what I believe, obviously Live is the bare minimum people expect now, the features it has are basic at the end of the day.
If the economy hasnt picked up with Joe Publics around the world having more disposable income then price will be a bigger factor than ever.

Graphics are at such a level now I am in no hurry to see the next console launch. I want to see better story telling, better characterisation and more innovation. All of which can be done on current console's.

Also many of the games being released on current consoles over 2010/11 will be better than the launch titles of the next console.

Console gaming is the new Hollywood. MW2 took more in pre-orders and grossed more on its first day than Avatar did! MW2 peaked on XBL with over 25 million unique users playing it in the first week of march with over 10million users logging on to XBL to play it on the launch night. These are truly astounding numbers.

Wii has a totally different demographic to PS3 and 360. Wii's tend to be familly bought devices (that is where Nintendo marketing was clever, not in either the hardware or the wiimote) whereas the average range for PS3 and 360 is something like 18 - 45 years old. With the +30 market being the largest consumers. I say Nintendo were clever in their marketing, as they have sold 100s of 1000s of wii fit, and nearly every one sits unused, yet they were going to get the planet fit (so they claimed, in reality it had very little effect on fitness). Dont get me wrong, as most households, who have young children, we have a wii and for the kids it is great. But imho it doesnt deliver what it should have done, the wiimote is flakey at best and to make it work like it was advertised I now have to invest in the the wiimote plus add-on.

The biggest sectoral growth in gaming has been interactive gaming, wiimotes, and pseudo instruments (Rockband), and the new PS3 wands.

Wii sales are slowly on the decline now, they are at market saturation in most markets. Where they missed out was integration between the Wii and the DS. They could have done far more in this market, which they didnt. Instead they chose a continual upgrade programme for the DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSiXL and the shortly to be launched DS2 (expect July). But we did see a peak in wii sales when they finally launched the black wii, once again clever marketing by Nintendo.

All in all I have to applaud Nintendo, through clever marketing and restricting product to market they have created a massive demand for a console that in my opinion is pretty meh.

Dont forget a important factor regards sales.
Id assume for many X360 and Wii offers piracy and the ability of free games.

Credit to Sony for having the only console not cracked (to my knowledge) come to think of it I cant remember a console in the last decade even longer that stayed uncracked for this length of time after the PS3 original release or didnt have a disc swapping or backup device option.

People forget if anything Nintendo took the idea of "motion control" from Sony and enchanced it further. What was "eye toy" and "six axis" if not motion control?
Now Sony bring out a revised version in "Move" beating what the wii has done and Sony get called for copy cats, its funny that.

Also although I dont think they have achieved what they really want yet PSP-PS3 compabitility is an area that again only Sony seem to be concentrating on with compatibility between the home console and handheld. GT5 is one aparent game that will take this further than before allowing car exchanges transferring of replays etc. Now somone tell me so I can explain to my 10 year old daughter why Nintendo have not done a wii version of Nintendogs with motion puppy loving and having a compatibility between the wii and DS versions?

Do people believe "Natal" will be better than "Move" and really how are they priced/comparable as these devices will play a large part of future sales and attracting the millions of yet be 1st time console owners. Credit to Microsoft in what they have achieved with online, truley did live up to next gen and the whole gamertag/gamerscore stuff. As for Nintendo what do they do next to stay ahead of Sony/Microsoft moving into their motion gameplay previous exclusivity.

It's probably worth noting that six axis was announced a good 7 months after Nintendo's motion controller (predating the wii name) announcement. I think it's fair to put 'video controls' in a different category to true 'motion control' with a physical controller because of the tactile feedback an actual controller provides, it ultimately is a different experience. Not that I'm an advocate of the Wii or anything, frankly when I tried it I was horribly disappointed.

Is anyone really expecting a massive increase in graphics with a next generation console? While the technology is clearly there to make them much more powerful know the cost of developing games is the real issue holding them back. In the PS1 days it cost a few hundred thousand pounds to make a game, by PS2 days a few million and PS3 tens of millions. Are developer going to really want to spend hundreds of millions producing games in the future? If that does happen the no developer is going to want to take any risks and we're going to be stuck playing sequals for ever.

Looking at the 3 consoles and Hardware Sales/Attach Rates and Software Sales,

The Wii seems to be peaking, hardware sales are dropping off, but that peak is massive.. and quite frankly staggering by any measure. To say it's peaked isn't that bad a thing, but I think it's ripe for Nintendo to be really looking at the Wii 2 or whatever and we know new hardware is alledgedly coming.

The PS3 is no where near it's peak, or it better hadn't be. Despite some pretty impressive console sales, it's attach rate and more importantly it's AAA 1st party titles are not selling anything like some 360 exclusives (GeoW2 / Halo 3 ODST being prime examples). Also looking at third party titles, they sell disproportionately more on the 360. My guess is the PS3 with BR has a novelty factor that means a sizeable amount of people buy the console for BR etc but don't play hardly any games. Thus the important LTD hardware sales that people cling to are a bit skewed. But there is a silver lining. Move and further growth of 1st party titles seems ripe for the picking. Move may well attract the PS3 owning non-gamers as well as possibly extend the PS3 userbase, although it is a little too much like the Wii which is already in everyone's home, but good marketing and some good IP may make it a good solid success. The 1st Party IP is growing, and Sony are open in interviews about telling developers to make games that are technically above the 360, so far this hasn't transferred to superior sales figures over 360 1st party titles, but surely this can be improved upon, GoW3 and GT5 should turn the tide surely, both are long standing franchises that are known to sell consoles.

The 360 is a hard one. Everything tells you that it has peaked, every year is declared the year of the PS3 on many many forums, everyone talks down the 360 on graphics, lack of BR, noise levels, and just about everything they can, Natal is being shunned by forums, yet despite all this, the 360 still continues to sell well, has the highest attach rate, has disproportionately high sales rates on a lot of 3rd party games and has really opened up a lot of previous exclusive titles to being multi-platform. As of today, I'd say that the argument for the 360 reaching a plateau are sound, however, they have a lot of room to move on console pricing (cheeky sods effectively upped the cost of ownership with the £150/£200 RRP's for the Arcade/Elite), it's seemingly too close to the 'does it all' PS3 for comfort, but still sells 'enough' to keep MS happy, surely a 360 slim at £100 / £130 (without/with HDD) would have a big impact on sales and start gaining momentum. Then it has Natal, the thing that a lot of devs/tech heads seem to really love in concept, but is not being received very well on forums, mainly due to the difficulty putting it in to context (Move has surprisingly had the best reception, but in terms of it being largely a Wii++, it's easy to see how it can work). Natal has the biggest chance of nose diving, but considering that it may have much further implications in non-gaming interfacing, it may prove to be something that becomes standard in the future.

So basically, I see the PS3 and 360 as having different areas in which they can continue growth, the Wii is probably passed it's best..

As they get more complicated and more capable, it's inevitable they'll become more prone to crashing and bugs.

Same thing applies with phones these days, the old 3310s etc never crashed, whereas the more complicated phones/smartphones we have these days are far more susceptible to crashes, lock-ups etc.

No, this is just what we've been programmed to believe as consumers.

Look at modern airliners. They are very complicated systems. Would it be acceptable if modern planes fell out of the sky because they're "more capable, hence more prone to crashing and bugs!"? Of course not.

It *all* comes down to profit margins. Durable, reliable parts cost more money. When lives *aren't* at stake, manufacturers will buy the absolute lowest quality materials they think they can get away with. They don't worry so much about extensive testing either.

This is why modern consoles fail more. Cutting costs to make more profits. Complexity adds to this problem, but it's not the root cause.

i think 360 peaked 18 months ago ps3 has some way to go just yet but i have to admit god of war 3 ff13 and uncharted 2 are bloody amazing games in their own right , just wish some devs would put time into making games like this for pc

i don't know of a title before or after that has received so much attention and such huge sales on release.

Tetris - over 35 million copies sold
Wii Sports- 41 million sold
MW2 - 4.7 million sold on day 1

In fact none of the Halo series comes close

How many of that Tetris was on release day?

Wii Sports doesn't count because it's a bundle game

and MW2 is multiplatform (although I agree this comes close)

Your opinion seems heavily US based. I'd go and check some sales figures. Espeically Globally.

I did, I used VG Chartz for 'all regions'..

Of course, I'm not sure how accurate VGChartz is, perhaps you can point me to a more accurate source? Because according to their data, it's as I said..

e.g. http://vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?re...3=All&game3=Killzone+2+-+PS3[12253]&weeks=100

and http://vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?re...3=All&game3=Killzone+2+-+PS3[12253]&weeks=100

Wii Sports wasn't bundled in all regions - certainly not Japan, and possibly not the US but don't quote me on that.

Tetris is widely quoted as being the bestselling game evar, but that also includes the copies bundled with the original Gameboy.
