The Swiss parliament has reportedly passed a law to ban any violent

videogames from going on sale within the country, with further proposals in the pipeline which could see all first-person shooters for adults being banned specifically.

Dear god what kind of censorship is that how extreme, what is the point in this?

I hope this never happens here what will they do with all the games I have purchased on steam block me from using them?

Draconian or what?

The Swiss Armed Forces perform the roles of Switzerland's militia and regular army. Under the country's militia system, professional soldiers constitute only about 5 percent of military personnel; the rest are conscript citizens 20 to 34 (in some cases up to 50) years old. Because of a long history of neutrality, the army does not take part in armed conflicts in other countries, but is part of several peacekeeping missions around the world.

The structure of the Swiss militia system stipulates that the soldiers keep their own personal equipment, including all personal weapons, at home

Good job they're banning violent games eh, imagine what it would be like if people had compulsory access to guns? ;)

Further motions currently being put forward by other political groups include the Christian Democratic Party's call for a ban of all first-person shooters rated by PEGI as only being suitable for 16+ audiences.

Not trying to bring religion into this, but IRL, the only people I have heard that think video games are violent, and cause violence are Christians, even though there is plenty of violent things written inside the Bible.

well when mw2 came out and seeing known retailer and selling it to 8 ~ 10 year olds without even asking id maybe it is the way forward, people should take it more seriously like for example alcohol they would not sell it to 8 year old would they

Calls for tougher laws on retailing, not flat out banning it. Banning games because they may cause people to be violent (Still waiting to see an actual study on this) is like banning football because it may cause people to be violent....wait a second...

This, partly.

You also have to consider that the people making the legislation and a large % of the voters they target are getting on in years, and probably don't fully understand the medium of video games.

Besides, ultra-violent video games are largely a recent development, when you think about how much more realistically graphic violence can be rendered in today's games.

Back in the day, Cannon Fodder, Settlers and Worms were violent, but you never saw uncanny valley virtual human decapitations, complete with blood spurts and sinews. And now you do.

At some point, we have to agree boundaries, or we're going to end up with virtual snuff games on the shelves of game shops :p

The truth is, anything can incite a person to violence. I'm sure most people realise this.

I'd argue that video games can have an impact in impeding social skills, which can contribute to increased violence. However, the games themselves do not have to be violent in nature to do this; they merely have to occupy a lot of your time.

And in that way, they are little different to TV or books or other (potentially) anti-social hobbies.

in that case why not ban alcohol because some shops have sold it to under 18s in the past.

weird logic.

Arn't you the guy who claimed to save a woman and child from a sinking car then never posted in GD again after being busted? :p

Apparantly being able to walk into a clinic to have yourself killed is more ethically correct than shooting things in a video game.

insanity, games dont make people violent...if anything having a way to release that kind of stress and frustration must be good right?
