OK, we've lost the main set of keys for our SMax, leaving us with just the spare set of keys (+remote)... I suspect a replacement from a dealer will cost silly money.

Is there a simpler/cheaper alternative someone is aware of?

Ta...

The last time (admittedly a fair while ago... maybe 10 years) I got a spare key from the parts desk at the local Ford dealer, it wasn't outrageously expensive. They read the key bumps and ordered the key in for me ready cut.

Info here on programming keys: http://www.mirez.co.uk/KeyProg.htm

About £180 for a remote fob for my old Mondeo, not sure if yours will have the new style keys or if that would change the price at all

Argh! What a waste of money!

Right, I'm going to turn the house upside down (again) tonight!

I had another spare key cut and programmed at a local key cutter. I had to phone around for one that was able to program a Ford key - but they do exist.
The guy coded it from one key.
The key cost £40 I think but it was without a remote fob - which wasn't an issue as its only a spare key that I have laying around my house.

Well the key is the easy bit. The remote is the difficult/expensive bit.

We really need a key+remote. ie: If you lose it, or it breaks, you want a spare!

To think I had a whole new immobiliser fitted in a car for £120!!!! And here's just a key costing almost twice that!

I'm pretty sure it's Dealer only mate. :(

Yep, dealer only unfortunately - if you had 2 you could recode a third, but you'll need to go to Ford to get new ones coded to the ECU
I got a bloke in a van to do mine with only one key. He undercut the main dealer by £50 but he told me that his prices vary depending on the area he was working in. I found him on google and he was very helpful. He came to my house at 6am as he had other jobs to get to but gave me a choice of when he wanted to do it.

I'll find the number for you in a minute.

Edit: I had a Ford Focus 53 plate; He cut a new key for me and programmed the immobiliser+central locking fob thing from just one spare key.

Edit2: http://www.ford-car-keys.com/services.html - I'm sure you can find someone more local to you to do it though.

Much appreciated! I've found 3-4 such companies now, so I'll ping them all a "how much" :)

Apparently his computer thing cost £2k but imagine doing only 2 jobs a day at £150~ each. He did say that he got quiet periods but I would be happy with just one job a day!

Wonder if he'd do a second while he was there for an extra £20! :)

Faced with a £200 bill, last night, I turned the upside down again for the missing keys to our SMax. Looked in my car just incase. Looked in the garage... The kids room... Under/in the sofas... Through the kids toys... Behind the draws in the kitchen... Nothing...

My other half suggested further place where I may have lost them, so was out in the garden & shed with a torch in the dark, was looking through all my clothes again...

Nothing! I must have thrown them in the trash or something like that was the conclusion!

Then lying bed last night, remembered the day the keys went missing, my other half had babysat next door, taking her laptop with her to do some work. I told her, "go down stairs and look in your laptop case".

A few seconds later, I heard a tell tale jingle...

Boy, have I got some brownie points now!!!

I'll look into getting one of those blank keys off an auction site for £30, and at least programming the remote on it. If I lose a set all I need do then is get the key itself cut!?
