Budget 2010

And it is all over. Next to no actual economic detail and lots of politics. Gee, anyone would think it was purely an election ploy.

This Party Election Budget was brought to you by the Labour party...

The only manure is the false dichotomy you're presenting. If there's one thing we can be certain about regarding energy, there isn't a singly solution. There is no reason why wind can't make a significant contribution (say 15-20%) within a decade, which is significantly more than nuclear has made in the last decade!

Wind is not a long term solution, and will never generate 15% of our needs and is very inefficient as far as land use goes.
Within a decade we will be able to shift the majority of oil based energy consumption (ie cars) onto things that depend on electricity. This means that we will need far more capacity, that only nuclear or coal can provide.

Wind is only a stop gap measure due to the (relatively) fast building speeds of the turbines - it will help avoid the blackouts that are forecast until we have nuclear online (the forecast was for 2012, but the recession has probably pushed that back to 2015-18 at least).
If we were to build nuclear NOW, we would have them online by 2015/18 - but we aren't (see reply below).

E has already said nuclear is going to be built. Renewable isgoing to pay a part though. If invested in we will be the for runner and bring much needed manufacturing jobs, which can be sold to the world. Renewable is a massive sector, which will only get bigger. We are in a great position to grab a big slice. But only if we invest.

All I have heard from this government about nuclear is that "we will built it ... at some point", there have been no contracts negotiated or given out, no sites confirmed and no expected completion dates.
Hell, we haven't even planned anything yet - all they have done is talk, talk and talk some more.

By now, in the 13 years of Labour, with 10 years of "boom", we should have multiple new nuclear stations in this country - instead we have no new ones, and no new ones for at least 20 years (the major component manufacturers have their order books filled for over 10 years by the Chinese and Indians)

But that's the budget plan 60 million to support manufacture in the uk of wind turbines. It is paltry but rember they will get money for building these new wind farms as well.

Ah ok, I missed that bit. :)

Although it does beg the question, are they going to start up a company manufacturing them, to negate the UK company that used to make them shutting down...:p

Selling the banking shares will give government the money they spent back ...

If you cull the waste in the public sector, then you can cut taxes by that same amount.
If you cull the waste that is the benefits system, then you can cut taxes by that same amount.
If you kill off the aid and development budget & kill off the money contribution to Europe, then you can cut taxes by that same amount.

Devils advocate...

Show me the waste, where is this waste you speak of?
Do we get rid of the dustmen (or is it dust people)?
Do we get rid of the nurses?
Do we get rid of the people who are obviously already doing a good job looking after abused children in the London borough of Haringey (tinted with sarcasm here)?

When we’ve culled all of this waste, what do we do with them? Do we ask them to find other jobs, or do they go into our much maligned benefits system?
Do they move to Belize?

I share your resentment, truly – but things aren’t as black and white (or as blue) as we’d all like it to be.

Amp34 - The University thing is more engineering, maths and sciences; not media studies and other non subjects.

As if, those are the courses with dropping in takes - and Labour have not done anything for 13 years to sort it - in fact, they've probably made it worse by slapping higher fees onto students

Cameron isn't on fire though, all he does is pick fault at Labour policy and to my recollection we are still waiting on hearing what their budget and policies would be at the next election. So far all he has done is make cheap comments and remarks but yet nothing solid or set in stone from himself.

As far as I can see, all hot air and not a single policy to date that we can use to compare to other parties to help the vote in the next few months. Personally I doubt I could vote for any of the three major parties.

...and no new ones for at least 20 years (the major component manufacturers have their order books filled for over 10 years by the Chinese and Indians)

We could always buy some off the Iranians - I hear they're knocking up a couple of power stations! :D

well untill you have to start giving them all benifits and then the cost of actually moving thier work somewhere else.

If they are doing a job that needs to be done, then it is not waste.
However the quangos, and pencil pushers (ie most of DVLA) are not jobs that need to be done.
