With the shutdown of Innovative Marketing Ukraine, we finally get to see how big virus writing and distribution is. Corporate offices, HR departments, call center and an affiliate program aside, hacking is bigger than you may realize.

The average "affiliate" of IMU could make up to $5/year if they were good at getting the malware out. And they didn´t just get paid for getting your computer infected, they got bonuses for sales and performance too.

The biggest challenge in getting these guys shut down is most of them are based in countries that either allow hacking or the officials turn the other way. Cooperation is improving to shut them down, but not nearly as fast as the developers are.

Thought some would find this interesting

Not really viruses, more malware. :D

My sister downloaded something like this the other day, ironically when trying to download Malware bytes... There was an advert on the left of the download page that was more prominent than the download button for the legitimate program...

It did the usual, she used it to scan the computer and it "apparently picked up 1000 problems, managing to "sort out" 20 of them before telling her to pay for the rest of the program...

I had 4 PCs in my house last week sorting out a similar problem however theirs wouldn't go past the 'Buy the Malware protector' screen.
Of course it's Malware but when you can't use your computer I think most would call it a virus.

"The video that you just clicked on, well it requires you to install our software to view it.

good for us that do pc repairs on the side too ;) thankyou hackers

:D My thoughts Exactly. I wouldn't get my litle earners if there wasn't malware & Hackers & the like so Leave them alone. :p:p:p

So she called Norton for help and was referred to the company's technical support division. The fee for removing Antispyware 2010 was $100. A frustrated Vlastelica vented: "You totally missed the virus and now you're going to charge us $100 to fix it?"

LOL that business model is almost as bad as the malware creators!
